New Baby On The Way - Pit Bull is "Out of Control"Question:Hello, I've been looking at your threads here on dog behavior, and some of them touch on my questions about Karma, but I am hoping that you all can give me some more advice as to the acutal issues we've been having with her lately. I am 5 months pregnant, and until recently have been able to work with Karma on a regular basis to "keep her in line" as far as obediance goes. Lately though, it just seems as if she knows that I can't handle her in the same mannor that I did before; using excercise, dicipline and affection (all 3 in that order). When she's in the house, she's obediant... until I want her to go outside. She has started to "run" from me and forces me to lead her out the door. Also, when she's outside, she won't come when called. She isn't aggressive at all, rather she makes a game of "catch me if you can". She's started doing this with my husband now too. She's also started to jump on people. Although this isn't a huge problem, because she corrects herself about 90% of the time, and when she doesn't... a simple off command or sit will snap her back into a calm submissive state. As I said, we have a baby on the way. I'm 5 months pregnant and I don't have the energy to chase her all over the yard. I know that my not going to get her is teaching her that it's okay to ignore us, but I'm not willing to put my, or our baby's, health at risk over a game. Another thing that she's started doing... she's become very anxious when we leave the house. She's never been distructive, but now she's torn our vertical blinds off the window and what hasn't been pulled down is full of holes. (She isn't the only culprit in this behavior. Our other 2 are in on it as well.) Any advice on how best to handle this and get her back on track before the baby's born would be grately appreciated. Answer: You should be crating all your dogs when ever you are not home. You don't say what the others are, but if they are small - even moreso. Are all your dogs neutered? She is obviously bored silly & not getting nearly enough exercise. I assume from what you said, she is not getting several good brisk walks every day which also means less time with you. Can you hire a dog walker? I don't know what the other 2 are but especially a pit needs a very strong leader. You cannot let her see herself as alpha. As for her not coming when called in the yard, don't take her out without a leash Answer: Thank you for your reply suebgone. While I'll agree with you that she may be a little bored, I have to say that this isn't the whole of the problem. She's got 2 other dog friends to play with (Karma - 8 month old APBT; Boaz - 4 month old Lab/Chow; and a stray rescue Axel - 8-9 month old Lab.), and they go at it all day long, and they pretty much wear each other out. I'm a stay at home mom right now, and so these dogs are in and out all day long. I can't walk Karma right now, but I do throw the ball in the yard and they have a rope “swing” (it isn't actually a swing, but just a rope that hangs from a tree about 2 feet from the ground, that they like to jump up and tug on). Our yard is nearly ˝ acre, and so they do have plenty of room to run and romp, with a “natural” obstacle course of sorts (trees, bushes, etc). As for taking her out on a leash, this isn't an option when I'm home alone. As I said in my previous post, I'm 5 months pregnant and I am not able to handle her the way I did before. I've decided that for the time being, I'll have to use a pronged training collar to take her out so I'll have more control. And as for the behavior in the house, we don't leave Axel and Boaz in the house anymore while we're not home. Karma stays pretty calm when she's in the house alone. So, most of the trouble I'm having can be dealt with pretty easily... but, this not coming when called whether she's indoors or out... this is what I need help with. Not only can I not chase her around the yard, but it's getting harder for me to crawl into her “hiding” places to drag her outside when I want her to go. |
