Do puppies ever learn to sleep late?

Question:
We have a 16 wk old lab (got her at 13 wks) that can go 4-5 hrs during the day between potty breaks -- although I take her every 3-4 hrs to be on the safe side. At night I take her out at 11:30 p.m. and she's quiet until about 4/4:30 a.m. I take her out to potty, but she doesn't make a beeline to get to the spot; she does go within about 10 minutes though. But this makes me think I could try to hold her off for a bit longer. The problem is that my husband gets up for work at about 4:45 a.m. so once I'm up with her, I don't feel I can put her back in the crate because she'd see/hear him and bark like crazy. So far her early morning barking hasn't woken our 3 and 5 year olds, but I haven't attempted going back to bed after the early potty. Will she ever just naturally sleep later? (She doesn't love her crate, but is learning to tolerate it). Any advice would be welcome -- my days are VERY LONG.
Answer:
Dogs are creatures of habit and schedules. First your dog is a PUPPY and it will be awhile before the babe is mature enough physically and mentally to sleep late. Also, early morning the pup has slept most of teh night and has energy to burn off. Labs are a higher maintenance breed in regards to slower menatl maturing and High energy requirements. If you work a long day chances are you do not have what it takes to keep a lab happy and fit physcally and mentally. Your husband should give her a SOLID run in the mornings - good 20 minute walk and increasing in time as she grows when he gets up that way she will more than likely go back to sleep for a bit while he gets ready for and goes to work. Most labs need at least three hours of exercise a day. I have lived with labs and they are NOT an easy breed regardless of what folks say. yes many are friendly but they are also high energy and have a long adolescent phase. What a lab needs is about: Morning - 20 - 45 minute walk (younger pups will tire out more as will seniors) Midmorning - good play session Midday - another walk or play session Afternoon - walkor play eve - 20 - 45 minute walk depending on age Before bed - play again. And during this training sessions. A lab that gets enough physical and mental workouts as an adult will sleep. But if a dog gets used to getting up at a particular time, that is what it will adjust to. A late morning in my house is 6 am - 7 am if we are very lucky!
