Both Dogs at ER Vet - HGEQuestion:I had to bring both my Jindo gals to the er vet last night and they are still their. So far they have been diagnosed with HGE (Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis). Here is the background behind what lead me to bring them to the vet. ----------- We do not use rat poison in our house, we do have ant traps but the bait is internal and it's in-cased in metal and located in places the dogs can't reach. I've also never seen them bother with looking for the traps or messing with them. I recently introduced a new food CA Natural Lamb & Rice (which they have been on CA Chicken and Rice before, and other food products containing a variety of protein sources, with no incident so long as I switch them over gradually.) Kyung-Soon the 4 month old is in better condition then Jin-Sook. I'm waiting for them to fax over all the test results so I can take a good look at them. I know so far their red blood cell count is elevated and a few other concerns here and there which were not mentioned to me but to my s/o instead (but he doesn't recall exactly what was said.) Starting at 10:30pm on Sunday night Jin-Sook became really antsy and had another bought of insomnia so I had to stay up with her. She had puked that night what looked to be her afternoon meal and a treat I had given her earlier (a treat she has eaten before with out incident.) From there on she had no desire to eat anything but was very thirsty. At about 3pm on Monday she started to have bloody thick diarrhea , I came home and she was still very lethargic wouldn't hold up her tail moved slowly and visibly had lost weight, her stomach was concave. I offered water a little at a time which she held down. Around 10pm Monday night I was woken up by Kyung-Soon puking up her afternoon meal (which she was given nearly 6 hours earlier). I then gave offered Jin-Sook some prescription food I was given from the vet for her and she wanted nothing to do with it, though she did consume some unflavored pedialyte, a couple seconds afterwards while laying down she started to vomit bloody liquid from the side of her mouth. Her whole body was shaking and became stiff, she could not even lift her head up while this was happening and laid her mouth in the pool of vomit. A couple minutes later Kyung-Sook started to run around vomiting up more mucus blood all over the place. Jin-Sook stood up unsteadily to go outside and go potty at that time it was the same bloody thick diarrhea but this time with a black tarry substance in it. Upon returning inside she stood and vomited a lot of liquid blood for a good 50+ seconds straight. We had to lift Jin-Sook into my car, Kyung-Soon came with but was still in much better spirits. Even when arriving at the vet looking miserable, as soon as we walked in their was a dog in the waiting room active aggressively, and even in their condition they stood between us and that other dog posturing and remaining alert. I called the vet this morning as it was 11am and they still had not called me, they said they would call me back with a report later but offered no news, and they have not called back yet and it's almost noon. Don't mean to be so graphic, but I feel sharing information could be beneficial to them right now if anyone else has been through an experience like this. Kyung-Soon was happy to see us when we said goodbye, but Jin-Sook was understandably upset with me. As many of you may remember Jin-Sook can not be confined, and to see her laying down in a crate for the first time ever with out even a concerned look on her face was heart breaking. I said good night to them both and kissed them and I can still recall the smell of the pungent blood on their breath. ------------- *update! We spoke with the day time vet a moment ago. They offered Jin-Sook food which she refused (it's about 2 1/2 days that she has not eaten now.) but she is consuming water and holding it down so far. They offered Kyung-Soon some food and puked before she even got it in her mouth. I will be visiting with them after I get off of work but other then that there has not been a noticable change. Please keep them in your thoughts! Answer: I'm so sorry, AngelZoo. I hope they get better soon! I'll be thinking of you and the doggies. Answer: I am so sorry. I really hope thatthey are okay. Answer: How scary. I hope and pray they make a full recovery. Answer: How awful!!! Is there a chance that they were poisoned? Could someone have thrown something into your yard? (Always one of my fears.) My prayers are with you and the Jindo girls. Answer: any updates? Answer: Thanks for the support guys, and sorry, I've had my hands very full lately, even more then usual. ^_^ As of 2 days ago both girls returned to their normal activity level and behaviors, though Monday at 4:30am Kyung-Soon woke me up to her puking bile a few times with in a couple minutes. But at least that is the only such incident we have had since they have been home. The two fecals came back negative for parasites, the fecal culture came back OK (as in no excessive amounts of bacteria etc.) So this leaves possibilities such as hyper activity, stress, toxin/poison or other... I would not be surprised if perhaps it was some kind of poison, even though I don't use it in my home, doesn't mean neighbors don't. As both my dogs are hunters and Kyung-Soon will eat anything even if it's non digestible. I do go out with my girls ever since the night they both got out, but with the falling leaves it has been hard to monitor my yard for anything small out of the unusual. Nowadays I kick their lil butts (not literally) back inside the second I see them licking at something in the back yard. Jin-Sook has been obsessed with something under the deck for the past 2 months, perhaps something died under there I really don't know. (it's a deck that is only a mere 3 inches off the ground and I can not get under it.) We live in what used to be a very nice and secluded neighborhood, though it has been going down hill, just a month or so ago I witness a car theft right in front of me while I was walking Kyung-Soon, and we recently received a notice that there has been "at least" one attempted break in near us. I couldn't completely rule out the possibility of someone poisoning my dogs so that a thief could more easily sneak into my yard and house (this was how the other break-ins happened.) They were weaned off the Purina EN and put on canned Natural Balance Duck & Potato which they will stay on for a long time if not forever. As well as 10 days worth of the Metradonzle (sp... bottles not in front of me.) After that I will be giving them Pepcid AC every night for as long as necessary. I had slowly worked back down to 2x a day feedings, but apparently that is just not enough for Kyung-Soon and I have gone back up to 3x a day, specially as all treats/edible chews have now been eliminated from their diet. I hope that they will continue to do well with no relapses! Cheers! Answer: I'm glad they're getting better! That poisoning thing is really scary. Answer: Glad they are both home safe. My dog had a this in the spring and there was nothing conclusive to say why. I know of at least 2 other dogs that had it as well and there is speculation it is some sort of virus or bacteria. I am so glad you got them there so soon, my boy nearly died from shock. Answer: I am so glad they are better. Answer: So glad they are doing better. I hope they are on the way to a full recovery! Answer: Did they rule out any types of virus? We have had a few foster homes that we network with go through this and both me and my close friend had issues. Most dogs had a 24 hour "flu like" thing, but a couple required 3-5 days to recover. Bloodwork showed the white count up, indicating a viral problem. We wondered if this was the dog flu that is making the rounds. It almost looked like parvo, except fast and thankfully quickly ended. |
