Coccidia...Help!

Question:
I adopted a 4 month old kitten. We found out last Thursday that she has coccidia. The vet kept her on antibiotic injections for 3 days & sent her home w/ Albon yesterday. We have her on Albon but tonight the leakage started again. The gas is horrible My question is, how long does it take coccidia to go away? Her bloodwork came out really good with a good titer as well. Our only concern is the coccidia.
Any hints..............

Answer:
Sometimes a second course of albon is needed. Usually it is given for 10 to 14 days.
Are you giving her yogurt as well? Good idea.

Answer:
Thanks! I will try some yogurt. Actually, we took her off the kitten Nutro & have her on Kitten Chow. Our vet thinks that it may be too rich for her. SIlly question, but any particular type of yogurt? They have one w/ acidophilus now. Would that be better or just good old fashioned plain yogurt?
Thanks for the hint!

Answer:
acidolpholous is another probiotic so yes use that. I assume she has diarrhea from the coccidia? That would be why the vet said the food was too rich?

Just fyi, Albon does not "fix" coccidia, the kitten has to do that.
Albon helps to decrease the reproduction and such, but the kitten has to have the proper immunity response to eliminate the problem.
Good food IS a huge help in building the immunity so a kitty can fight. A poor immune response to coccidia can mean other issues for a kitty.

Answer:
Wonderful information! Thank you all. Actually, the diarrhea has stopped & she is now pooping more solidly. The leakage has also stopped. She has been on antibiotics for 10 days now. She still has another week of Albon left to finish. Is a stool test recommended after the Albon to check that the coccidia is gone?
Thank you ALL!

Latida,
Thanks! I am new to this whole coccidia thing..yuk! I have another question. We adopted her with her "Mom" or at least a cat that was nursing her when the hoader relinquished them. Mom shows no signs of coccidia & she is around 5 - 6 years old. Does she need to be tested? I think coccidia is a "kitten" sickness b/c older cats can fight it off..am I right?

Coccidia impact all ages and all species. Even adults can die from it if untreated. Cats with coccidia should not be allowed to share boxes with other cats or go to other areas of the house. Coccidia is near impossible to get out of the environment, fyi.
Adults with healthy immune systems can sometimes fight off the coccidia. But cats do not have to have diarreah to have coccidia. She could even be a carrier of the little buggers.

I have the kitten in her own kennel & has been away from Mom since last week Thursday when we got the diagnosis. Would Mom be tested through a feces sample or through a blood test? Obviously, she nursed her for the first 2 months so they have been in close contact & could definitely be a carrier. They are definitely "bonded" b/c Mom sleeps next to kitty's cage.
Thanks!

Sue, what is the dosing for acidolpholous???

IF you would be giving the pills, I have no idea. The vet should be able to tell you. She was asking about the yogurt with it in. sorry

It is a fecal test.
