Cat keeps licking itself

Question:
My cat keeps licking itself, mainly on a spot above his tail on his back. He's been doing this for a little over a week. Does anyone have an idea why he might be doing this? He comes in sometimes and you can see the fur moved around where he must frequently be licking it.

Answer:
Check for a hotspot (irritated skin) or see if its got a flea infestation. Most flea patterns show around the back legs and before the tail on the back where they will lick and chew to get at them. Some cats just have itchy skin and then again, cats do bathe alot .. or at least they should ... your cat just may think this is the spot that needs it the most

Answer:
I agree with above. Place cat over a white sheet or towel. Hold him upright and rub and scratch the fur over his butt area in a downward motion. If black stuff comes off onto the towel, it is fleas that he is itching. To verify, wet some of the black flea "dirt" with water. If they turn red, your kitty definitely has fleas. I personally like to use topicals for fleas such as advantage and frontline.
If not fleas, then perhaps allergies/dry skin.

Answer:
thanks for the replies, i scratched him and found the black stuff from the fleas. I'll go buy a topical for him.

Be VERY careful about buying OTC (Over the Counter) flea products, some can be harmful - even deadly - to cats.

Answer:
Stay away from Hartz products!!! I dont know how many cats we've seen come from a reaction to their products and start having seizures .... I use frontline or advantage on my cat and i've NEVER seen a flea on him. (same goes with the dogs although i've had to add a preventic collar when ticks get bad)
good luck!
