Swallowed RawhideQuestion:Ok, I must admit, I was pretty shaken a bit earlier and for a good reason. I was brushing peanut to get all the dead hair out and she kept fidgeting. So, I go over to the kitchen and I find a new rawhide bone. I give it to her to keep her occupied while I'm brushing, and it works. Well, while I was brushing, it looks like she broke off a piece of the bone and thought it was big enough to swallow. She gets up, gagging, and choking for like a good 10 seconds. I didnt know what to do, so I hit her on the back to try to get her to spit it out. She just keeps gagging for a few more seconds, and eventually she swallows it. Now this is where it really hit me. I remember reading a thread the other day about someones dog passing on due to an undigested greenie. My question is this; will the rawhide dissinigrate(sp?) or could this become a problem? Also, what should I do to maybe help her digest it? I dont want her to develop any problems or complications, and I think it goes without saying that she has just had her last rawhide anything. I threw the bone out and came to the computer to ask you guys for help and advice. Answer: I don't know what to tell you Nedim, but I really do hope the best for you and Peanut! Answer: I don't know what to tell you Nedim, but I really do hope the best for you and Peanut! Thanks. I was hoping someone would see this and reply soon. I'm kinda freaked out by this. I'm so paranoid when it comes to my little Wooby. Answer: Addie ate a rawhide bone once, too. Like you, I stopped giving those cause I think it says on the package not to let the dog swallow. meanwhile...she ate it so fast!! they sure don't look like something good to eat, but she was perfectly fine. I thought they would last at least an afternoon or something....geez, I HATE those things! Answer: Addie ate a rawhide bone once, too. Answer: nope..she didn't get sick, and I was as worried as you about it! the darn bone looked so 'sturdy', yet she had the end of in minutes. those things are a menace. :) Answer: Boris has done it a lot too, and he never got any problem. But if it's big enough for her to chocke on, it might be a problem. I don't want to scare you or anything, just check her poops and if you see any sign or her acting weird take her to the vet asap. I hope she will be ok! Answer: I'm sure you won't be giving Peanut anymore but for other people's future reference, if you hear the dog gagging check it's throat, most likely you will still be able to grab the rawhide before it goes all the way down. The rawhide will most likey be passed. If you notice your dog stop eating or drinking, lots of vomiting and/or diarrhea then you most likely have a blockage on your hands. So please keep a close eye on the dogs behavior for the next couple of days. Answer: rawhides are not supposed to be good anyways, so i heard. i know its a scary thing..poor peanut..(and u ) ;) http://www.bdnhumanesociety.com/rawhides.htm http://petplace.netscape.com/articles/artShow.asp?artID=2524 HEIMLICH MANEUVER ON DOGS) Answer: My dogs have eaten rawhide before and been perfectly fine. I don't give it often 'cause it's not the best thing but once in a while, and only when it's made in the United States. Answer: As other's said...keep a close watch for any blockage.....they can swell in bowels and cause blockage. Answer: I'll be sure to do that. The only signs are vomitting and diarreah? Answer: Usually a dog with an impaction won't eat or drink either, if they do they will most likely vomit it up. A lack of poop would also be a sign of impaction. Answer: Usually a dog with an impaction won't eat or drink either, if they do they will most likely vomit it up. A lack of poop would also be a sign of impaction. Ok, thank you. I dont see any signs of impaction as of yet. But then again, Peanut is VERY food driven. She pooped outside a little while back. I'll spare you the details, but I will say that it was normal. Thanks for the advice. Answer: Your welcome :) I hope "things" continue to run smoothly so to speak :D Answer: He'll be fine, but you're good to worry ...... everything will come out fine at the end ( or from the end !) but do keep us posted....we love you both !! Answer: Thank you both so much. I hope things will continue to run smoothly.lol. Can you believe my dad gave her cooked chicken bones today?? We got into an arguement and I had to take the bones out of her mouth. I mean seriously, who would give cooked bones to a dog? I had a dog almost choke to death before on cooked chicken bones. I was the only one there to see it happen, so that kinda added to my worries last night. Answer: I was reading the other day about the hiemlich manuver. It was saying you can do ito your dog. Go between the ribcage and push up. Basically same as a human. Probably not as hard though. Never tried it myself but I might if I thought one of mine was choking. Good luck. Hope everything comes out fine. Answer: I am sure your dog will be fine. Just like the others said, vomiting, not eating, not pooping, etc. are signs to watch for, but I am sure she will be fine. My dogs chew an occasional rawhide and have it gone in about two minutes, literally. If you think that is bad, my dogs ate 14 used tea bags one time. I will make the story short. I made tea, I put the tea bags in a bowl, then I made bacon for breakfeast, and poured the bacon grease over the tea bags when I was finished. This bowl was supposed to be emptied in the trash when the bacon grease cooled off, but it was on the counter while cooling, and in the meantime, one or all three of my dogs shared the bacon covered teabags and ate any reminants of them. Luckily I use tagless teabags with no staples. But I was so worried I called poison control with not much help for a dog, then I called my vet, and he said just to watch for unusual behavior, and all were a little spastic that day, but everything turned out fine, thank goodness. I guess they were on a caffeine high!! And I did find the passed teabags, Ohhhh gross From now on my tea bags go directly into the trash can, no messing around. Best wishes, Julie. Answer: Tea bags, hmmm . . . I don't even WANT to know some of the things Shiva's rogued. This should make you laugh - and feel a little better. http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showpost.php?p=76322&postcount=8 Answer: Renee.....WOW...lol. That must have been a most unusual feeling for both of you.lol Answer: another sign to look for is pacing back and forth not being able to settle and possibly panting, one of my dogs many moons ago was a theif, would eat anything he could get his mouth round, one day I noticed he was "off" and was concerned, so took him to the vet they said they could feel something in his stomach, siad give it a day and see if it passes, anyway after a lot of worry he eventually passed it, guess what it was? a beanie toy of a cow on ski's, about six inches tall with ski's still attached lol mo Answer: Ouch... Makes you wonder how they swallow that stuff. And Boris did the deli bag thing too... But he managed to poop the plastic papers alone at least. Answer: So far, no symptoms. Shes not "off", and her poop does not show any remnants of rawhide that I can tell of. She does pant, but then again, shes panted like that since the day I saw her at the shelter. So far, so good. Thanks for the advice and reassurance everyone. Answer: Just for the record, rawhydes are NOT digestable, which is why they aren't good for your dog and of course there is that choking factor too. If you have to give a rawhyde, the chopped, pressed ones are a better option (but they don't last very long). Hope your dog is okay! Pam Answer: Thanks. I was hoping someone would see this and reply soon. I'm kinda freaked out by this. I'm so paranoid when it comes to my little Wooby. My last dog ate a hell of a lot of rawhide, about an average of one box of the "Cheweez" beef basted per DAY. He would swallow hunks the size of a deck of cards, a 1/4" thick, several times a day. Never had a problem. Sure, sometimes he would hack a piece up, and also sometimes have problems swallowing too big a piece, but it wasn't a big deal to him. He did this for over 14 years and his teeth were WHITE when we put him down to due cancer, probably prostate. |
