Beef soup bone...good thing or bad???Question:Ok, today my grandparents were watching Mack (because our landlord had to do some work and he is afraid of Mack  ). Anyway, I just went to pick him up and my grandfather told me that they had given him a raw beef soup bone to chew on. Now, I don't know if it is good or bad that he gave him that. Mack seems ok, but should I be worried? Answer: I'm not an expert, but they say if the bone is raw it's okay. I'm sure others will know if I'm wrong. Answer: I was thinking it probably wouldn't kill him either. They used to give their old dogs those as well and they never got sick or died or nothin from them. I've been watching him really good and he seems ok, he isn't throwing up or acting strange. Infact, I think he's looking for another one. Answer: Perfectly acceptable and a good tooth cleaner too, especially if it had some nice meat on it still! Answer: My choice bone !!!! Answer: Yeah. Soup bones are great source of minerals and clean teeth as well :D Answer: so would people suggest that I give him the bones on a regular basis? If I did how many times a week or month should he get one of these bones. Would the bone be considered part of his meals, so should I give him less food, or the same amount of food? The reason I am asking is because my grandparents said he really seemed to like it, and they offered to pick him up a thing of them. And should I avoid giving them to Hannah since she is only a little puppy? Answer: I give him 1-2 large bones per day. I cook them first though because he refuses to eat them raw. But he's also pushing 140 pounds. Answer: I suggest giving them weekly. After they've gotten all the meat off, my girls will continue to chew on them. If we were giving them each a bone a day, though, we'd be feeding 83 bones a month - and they aren't exactly $cheap$ here. Answer: As for the teeth cleaning - they work better than anything else I've seen. Toothbrushing has barely worked for me, while the bones work great, plus the girls actually ENJOY them. Answer: We got a pack for them and for three bones it costed us like a little under two dollars. Mack was all excited when we put them away, I think he thought he was going to get them right away. Answer: That's about what I pay Julie. I can get about three soup bones for between a dollar and two dollars depending on weight. I'd give them everyday if I could afford it! But it's true that they'll chew on them long after they're clean. You know it's best to freeze them first? And to NEVER feed cooked bones. I'm sure you do but just a reminder... Answer: what's so horrible about cooked bones? Answer: I think they splinter a lot easier Answer: Those are the ones that will chip and cut your dogs stomach! Edit: I've heard they also splinter and cut gums as well. Answer: NEVER a cooked bone!! I start chip on a soup bone outside or in the garage...he usually takes 2 days to get the meat/ morrow etc off and if picked clean he can bring it inside ...he'll go to it for a month or so ...after that it's just another " toy ". I really can't find any "good" bone until fall and soup time. Answer: Orion... I had goldens that like to "ripen" their bones.....let them lay out or let you dog bury them for a while. Don't cook ! Answer: so it's ok if the meat sits on the bone for a day or so? I would be afraid to let it sit, won't he get sick? Yeah I froze them for him, I gave it too him but he didn't like it cold he'll probably wait until it unfreezes. Answer: LOL mine don't wait. I like them still frozen. It takes them longer to get everything out. Meat popsicles! I don't worry about them sitting with meat in them. I just make sure they are outside!!!! I BELIEVE that the bacteria is fine since they have strong stomachs that are made for eating gross things. They are scavengers! Answer: so if the bone is not cooked, if there is meat on the bone it'd be red raw meat ? And what exactly is soup bone..? Sorry I don't understand. Answer: That's about what I pay Julie. But it's true that they'll chew on them long after they're clean. You know it's best to freeze them first? And to NEVER feed cooked bones. I'm sure you do but just a reminder... Coocked soup bones dont shatter like chicken stuff does. Its perfectly safe to feed them this way. There are certain bones that can be cooked and certain bones that will cut the stomach lining. Also by soup bones I assume you mean cow legs Cut from thigh to knee? Answer: I give them frozen, too. I can just grab 'em out of the freezer and hand one each to the girls. They warm them up easily with their mouths and have a grand old time chewing on them. Answer: I give them frozen, too. I can just grab 'em out of the freezer and hand one each to the girls. They warm them up easily with their mouths and have a grand old time chewing on them. That would be my preference as well, and thats what I used to do. My dog one day just refused to eat raw bones period. Maybe he smelled something wrong in the meat? (We buy human grade stuff, the same things we eat). Since then he only eats them boiled. Answer: I don't know...May can be picky at times, too. Once the meat is off, she usually sits there are stares at the other dogs' bones. She'll chew on it again once it's dry though. The other two will eat anything. Answer: Some rib bones are sold for soup...I don't like those as I feel they splinter too easily raw or cooked. I like the shank bone or knuckle bone. For a very small dog, the round bone from a round steak will be O.K...leave a little meat on it and the marrow. Answer: I have learned through my raw feeding group that knuckle bones can be teeth breakers and I stay away from them. Any large weight bearing bones can be dangerous to teeth rather than beneficial. Once again, I have in the past fed knuckle bones until I learned that they can be bad. Answer: all bones are a no no in my house..first off cooked bones have been chemically altered by heat which makes them shatter into shards that can puncture an intestine..a very nasty horrible death...and raw bones can be a choking hazard..a soup bone killed my mother's irish setter as well as teeth problems..so no bone is a good bone. Answer: they usually don't eat the bone after they get the meat and the marrow out of the middle. They will chew on it for a minute or so and then they are done with it. My dogs, I have noticed, aren't big bone chewers (cabinet chewers they are but not bone chewers). Answer: every dog is different..you cant go by what one does and say they all will. there are some dogs that will do their darndest to swallow anything before someone else can get it and can swallow amazingly large things..like a big bone. It isn't worth the risk..not only that old boss said you can take two dogs that are the best of friends..throw in a bone and have a horrible fight. Answer: I agree that all are different.....depends on the dog and the type of chewers . I feel safe with Chip. Answer: I watch my dog very carefully when he has any type of bone. Hannah is just a puppy and I don't feel right giving her a bone yet, and Shelby won't touch the bones for some reason. I watch him though when he has one and he does really good with it. The other two might nibble for a minute but then don't want anything else to do with it. Answer: generally it's not safe to feed any kind of heat processed bone. regardless if it's cooked, boiled, roasted, barbecued, sterilized - the structure of the bone has been altered and the "gluey" substance that fills the pores of the matrix of a raw bone removed. you all know what this is - gelatin, used for making jello and similar stuff. it's what makes the bones flexible. of course you need to pick the correct bone for every individual dog, but items like knuckle bones and rib bones are generally very safe. neck bones are a little softer and mostly completely consumable even by moderate chewers. anyone who is interested in specifics, feel free to have a look here (http://www.ourdogsonline.com/boards/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=229&an=0&page=3#229). :) |
