Life with more than one dog..

Question:
So a JRT x at a local dog training place needs a foster. Surprisingly mom is okay with it *takes a moment to die of shock* She thinks it would be good actually.. Because there's no way in heck I can handle Cider and my unnamed cocker puppy.. and this'll show me but good..
But.. most people I know anymore have 2.. 3.. 9.. few have one.. So it can't be this terribly evil burden..
So I was wondering what you folk with 2+ thought it was like going from one up.. anything helpful, or scary to share?

Answer:
Nothing here...I loved it personally :D

Answer:
LOL, mighty helpful advice there, lol.

Answer:
I personally find having two dogs easier than one--as long as they get along. You are already walking, feeding, cleaning, etc. for one dog--so there really isn't too much more work per se. Training time will increase, and like I said, as long as they get along--it's all good. If they DON'T get along--then there is your work load increased!! I enjoy having two dogs--would find it hard to have only one.

Answer:
I LOVE having more than one dog. We were worried at first with Buddy being dominant but he accepted Banzai within a day or so.
Bella fits right in, but her and Buddy continue to have a battle of wills. ;)
Time will tell
I will NEVER have just one dog.

You asked So I was wondering what you folk with 2+ thought it was like going from one up
and I answered :p

Answer:
LOL true true.

Answer:
Well I have four and it can be a handful! lol But that being said having more than one does make it easier too because they do amuse each other and provide each other with company. If they are young it helps ease the burden of endless hours of wrestling lol. Costs go up of course! I can walk two dogs at a time but I can't handle all four of them at once. Steve has to come with me if we do that. That's usually when we go way out on a trail or to some remote lake or something. I think it's important not to let your first dog feel like he's being left out. Some dogs get bruised egos that way. Don't forget he'll need some special attention too. ;) It also might be good to give them their own places to hide out it when enough is enough. You'll have fun though :)

Answer:
When i'm ready to buy a house, i'm going to factor another dog into my mortgage ;) I'd really love a GSD, i've always loved them, and so does Jager.

Answer:
In the past I had up to 7 with mine and boarding and all were house dogs ....without kennels ! Loved it ! Really depends on the breed. It's only Ollie and me now as I really can't afford more . But Seger's here for a week and when I have Elin's dogs , I'm in hog heaven !

Answer:
I've asked before on other boards.. but it's never been 'real' it's been wanting...
Versus now it's real like.. I see food and vet feeds increasing.. and the uh oh which dog gets to take classes when... But I haven't come up with anything terrible... Nor have any of you yet, lol.
My parents never had more than one dog growing up.. (I had none ever till Cider). So they think it's impossible to live with two...

Answer:
What's terrible? I can tell you terrible
- if they don't get along
- twice as many chances of high vet bills
- if you one of them has 'accidents' in the house and another starts marking over top
um ...
ok it's not that bad :p

Answer:
LOL. Well I'm making arrangements to meet the possible foster, and plan on taking miss priss with me.. if she hates him then I can't.. but hopefully she won't hate my 12 week old puppy when he comes..
That's the only one that really bugs me at all...
The rest are more handleable... lol

Answer:
In a way having a second dog is 3X the work and in other ways it easens up the work load of owning a single dog. I''m usually I fairly busy person but sometimes between work, school, and drama I can get exceptionally busy and dont have the time to work the boys as much as I would like, but having the two of them, when they get that burst of energy from it being pent up, instead of taking it out in a destructive manner, they take it out on eachother with play LOL But then when it comes to finances and taking time to train and work the boys individually, its amazing how it all adds up so fast!! But in the end I think its worth it to have a multi-dog household and myself will always try to have at least 2 dogs.
Another thing I really like is during the day when I am at school or work, the boys are never alone because they always have eachother for company.

Answer:
Frankly I find it stressful. It's true, they do all FINALLY get along, but Wally doesn't play and would prefer not to hang around with Mike and Athena, and he also gets jealous when I pay attention to them so I'm super stressed trying to find a happy medium with giving them all love.
I also can't take Mike with me when we go places, so I always feel bad leaving him at home while I take Wally and Athena to walk the beach or go to a friend's house.
Having one dog was nice. Wally didn't need a buddy, nor did he want a buddy, and I'm sure he would love nothing more than to be an only dog again. It's going to be different with different dogs and their personalities, but in this house having 3 dogs sucks donkey balls.

Answer:
I loved having Sugar, and Hershey, and Shadow. :) (Sugar was gone before we got Shadow) And now, they are both gone, (Shadow is not dead) But, its nice having two dogs to keep you up and moving. :) Its not a burden at all!

Answer:
Morphine.. Would you do three dogs again in future if something ever happened to any of your babies, or would you eventually let it be a 1 dog house again?
I am meeting Jack at 11am on thursday with cider to see if they even like each other...

Answer:
I personally adore having multiples. I really want to try to have at least two dogs at all times. It's not easier, but it sure can be more fun. None of my dogs are dog aggressive though, and if they were that'd be a major concern for me. (The main reason why I won't have a breed known for dog aggression)
They play with each other. there's always more going on. They love each other's company for the most part. They do argue a bit, but we've never had a real fight, just Nikki grumping the little boys and telling them in her old lady way to leave her alone. LOL
hassles? Walking multiple dogs is harder. Walking four is really hard. It's hard to separate the dogs when they eat- Nikki is on a diet. Well, it's not hard, but it's an added hassle. You have to give out attention to all of them. Dogs can be jealous creatures. Added expense for food, grooming, vets, etc.
Overall, it's great though. I wouldn't change it for the world. :)

Answer:
I think its easy having two at a time. Though when I was little we had 3-4 at a time. The down side they can pick up each others bad habits. They also have each other to play with. Now this is good or bad depending on how you look at it. Bad because well your dog isn't in need of you for entertainment . Goog because well read the sentence above lol. Other then that its cake. Some times it can be hard to get one to listen when the other is around though also.

Answer:
I have three, and I find that is the best combination (Well, I maybe biased :p). When I spend quality time-alone with one for playing, cuddling or training, the other two can entertain each other and no one feels left out.
I'm lucky because my three adore each other. They get along very well. They do get into a little quarrel once in a while (just like any siblings should), but nothing mommy can't fix, so all is well.
The cost of food & vet care does double (triple in my case) - but i'm lucky in this aspect, too, because my three are small & healthy dogs. Small dogs don't eat much, and healthy dogs don't need to seet the vet that often :), so all is well here, too.
The only thing that reminds me of my craziness for having three dogs are the triple amount of poops I have to pick up each day, triple pairs of muddy paws I have to wipe, three wet tongues that try to lick my face.. :lol-sign:

Answer:
I have 4 dogs, but I live by the saying "the 3rd changes everything." At least for me it did...;)

Answer:
If I could do it all over again I think I would wait until Mollie passed and then get one dog. Getting 2 puppies (especially corgis) at the same time is probably the most stupid thing I have ever done. Maybe someone more dog savvy then me could do it, but for me...never again! A lot of the time I feel like I'm not paying enough attention to Mollie because I spend most of my free time training and exercising Izzy and Frodo.
I think that after Izzy and Frodo are gone I will probably only have one dog at a time from then on.
