Eukanuba Tournament of Champions

Question:
Is anyone watching this? Or did anybody watch this?
I get SO excited, and I actually get a little emtional and cry. What's wrong with me?
Anyone else wanna share their thoughts about this show?? :D

Answer:
I watched for a little while, but Dakota distracted me. I LOVED the Pug and the Whippet.

Answer:
I wanna see the Staffies ;)

Answer:
I'd like to see the working and herding groups, but I don't think they're on until tomorrow?
If they were on tonight, DAMMIT. Lol.

Answer:
Wasn't it on last weekend? I think they're re-running it..

Answer:
Really? I thought last weekend was the National Dog Show.
I think the Eukanuba show is today and tomorrow... not entirely sure, though.

Answer:
Oh heck, I don't know. I'm so confused. I'll let you all know when the Staffies come on :D

Answer:
I love their new commercial with all the dogs and the Celtic sounding music...."Dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs." Very cute commercial.
I usually watch it, maybe some for a while, then some later. My favorites are the working, herding, toy groups. Well, and the terriers, sporting, non sporting...and the hounds too. LOL.

Answer:
Good so far, sort of. Wasn't fond of the pap BOB, but Merlin got AOM. Victor and Colby (BIS/BISS CH CHINDALE HIDDENKEY SURVIVOR) got BOB/G3. (Japanese Chin and one of Beau's handlers)
Colby is retiring at the end of the year. :(

Answer:
I have it recording. It is on today and tomorrow. Last week's show was different. :)

Answer:
so far i liked it.
my favorite dog so far has been the otterhound. i forgot his name darn it! i have been following him through a few dog shows but for some reason his name has slipped my mind.
the irish setter was gorgeous

Answer:
You know what I love? THe Afghan Hound! Did I spell that right? They are so beautiful.

Answer:
Has the Rottweiler been on yet?

Answer:
wait is this the tampa one??? NM just found animal planet. does anyone know if they are still having the tampa one?

Answer:
I loved the PBGV, Pug, Irish Setter, Golden

Answer:
I missed the Terriers :( I didn't like any of the other dogs.
Although, the Ridgeback was GORGEOUS!

Answer:
how can they put some judges on some breeds *shakes head* i was looking a the one breed i do care about and they put a judge on Canaan dogs that only knows HALF the herding group. Canaans are one of the rarer ones. And the judges who dont know them mistake black and whites and blacks for good representations. GRRRR you do not want a black and white dog or black dog in the Israeli desert working. That is an american trait they were not origianally black and white. /end rant

Answer:
i missed it tonight but they are replaying it tommorow, so i'll definatly tune in :")

Answer:
Loved the Chin, and was very pleased with his placement. My Shiba's breeder has just very recently gotten into Japanese Chins, and actually now maintains the breeding program that this wonderful boy came out of (his breeder just died of cancer, and she wanted her line to continue on with someone she could trust).
I'm not a huge fan of the Shiba, although I have to admit I think he's matured a LOT since the last time I saw him in person, which was at an all-breed show in Puyallup. I find him slightly feminine for my taste, but tonight was a VAST improvement from that last year, when I mistook him for a bitch! Over all I think he's pleasing to the eye- he's balanced, and has a nice head, clear red coat color... I just wish he were a touch more masculine! He's a great showman, and that's hard to come by in Shibas, which often gets him the nod. And I like him a GREAT deal more than the National Dog Show representative for Shibas...sigh... (but I'm not even going to start with that, or this will never end).
I adored the Whippet as well.

That's awesome! I know Colby, he's a great little guy. I've gotten to meet him several times when I was at shows watching Beau show. His group of handlers were the ones that handled Beau. Victor Cohen, who has been his handler for some time now, handled Beau when his handler was injured. (She fell on a comb in the ring and it embedded in her leg so she was out a couple of weeks). He also handled Beau whenever Beau went up against their specials, Merlin. Last time I talked to Victor, he said colby was retiring at the end of the year. You know anything about that?
And the whippet was awesome. My favorite is the pbgv, just because she's so cute!

Answer:
I'd love to watch.. but I don't receive the channel... it would be AWESOME to see a IW or Deerhound win :D

Answer:
Both the Wilfhound and Deer hounds were BEAUTIFUL!!!

Answer:
Aww man, I missed! Usually I tune in on time to see it! Unfortunately, the Keeshonds practically never win. Actually, I think once it won something, but other than that they've never really won.
I love the non-sporting group, because I love the Spitz dogs, like Keesonds, huskies, akitas, samoyeds, etc.

Answer:
Both the Wilfhound and Deer hounds were BEAUTIFUL!!!
Ohh and I missed it :(

Answer:
Awww. You can look at them on the Animal Planet website!

The AKC site has links to all the winners- http://www.akc.org/nationalchampionship/index.cfm?text_event_number=2006277104&section=best_of_breed
The second half is still on tonight, so you can catch the end of it. ;)
Oh yay, just saw Harry Potter took BOB with Cardis. I love that dog. Every time I see him show, he's so happy going. :)

Answer:
I got to watch most of it, but fell asleep just after I saw the pointer. Marq, MY english pointer, was laying with me on the couch and I could hardly stay awake to even see the pointer. Once I saw her, I couldn't help but doze off. Too bad too! I wanted to see the cockers!
Tonight I WILL be watching it. :D

Answer:
Lol. My dad says if he has it his way next year I won't have to watch it on TV.. but I will BE THERE and showing in Jrs. :p
He's definitely got more confidence in my handling ability than I do. :p
BTW, who won the sporting group?

Answer:

Sporting G1 was James, the ESS.

Answer:
Yup, I watched some of it & taped it last night. I am SOOO watching it again tonight! lol

I actually haven't the slightest idea about Colby retiring- I know that my breeder works hand in hand with his handler, so I'm sure she would know. I'm only very peripherally involved in the Chins (so I'm learning everything purely by osmosis, LOL).
One thing I CAN tell you is that all the West Coast Chin people are absolutely FRIED that she got these lines- as they truly are some of the best in the country, and a relative unknown to Chins is taking the helm.
Colby's breeder flew mine out a while back because she loved what mine had done with both Lhasas (her first breed), and Shibas, and their breeding programs are very similar in style. My breeder also has a very long history in grooming and handling toy breeds (her mother was very well-respected in toys).
I'm so jealous that you've met Colby in the flesh! I really find him gorgeous, as well as quite masculine (which the Japanese value a great deal in ALL of their breeds), and have met several pups with his lines- and all I can say is that while I was NEVER a "toy dog person" before, these guys consistently make me reevaluate my position. Rock-solid temperaments (no skittery neurotic dogs here), affectionate, and great conformation.
Have you been able to put your hands on him? I'd love to see what the little guy is made of!
As a side-note, I just realized that I know the Lhasa that took best of opposite yesterday. Her breeder is also one of my very good friends in Shibas, but has been having considerable success with her Lhasas (which go back to my own breeder's Lhasa program), as of late. This Lhasa girl is absolutely GORGEOUS and such a love- I believe she's also ranked 4th in the country, all-breed. I wish she'd gone BOB, but the dog that went up over her was a nice boy that's done a lot of winning as well!

Answer:
OK, I am just now watching it as I recorded it... was that lab not incredibly stocky and it looked like he was barely able to run? Is that 'standard'?

Answer:
was that lab not incredibly stocky and it looked like he was barely able to run? Is that 'standard'
I REALLY didn't like the Lab either. I just feel like the breed should SCREAM athleticism and this dog really didn't do it for me.
I think "Buzz" CH. Aquarius Centercourt Delight is a much better example of a show-bred lab. He's the top winning lab of all time.
This dog at least looks like you could take him on a run without stopping every 800 meters
http://www.aquariuslabradors.com/buzz.htm
(The puppy photo of him alone is worth looking at...I hate to be swayed by cuteness, but there's no other way to describe it!)

Answer:
Thank god, it wasn't just me who thought the lab was odd.
He was HUGE. Big block head, stocky, short..sounds like the making for a Pit Bull :D :D Didn't seem "standard" to me at all. But what do I know?

Nope, haven't gotten to touch him, just see him at shows and while I'm talking to Jackie about Beau. Truthfully, I paid more attention to the papillons lol. They were handling two Chins a while. I think the other one was a female. She and Beau were best of friends and were constantly playing with each other. (Doesn't help that Beau thinks he's a stud either) Was that one from the same breeder? They work pretty closely with the same breeders, or at least they do with papillons. They've handled Beau's two sisters and his aunt (and Harry's mom) after her original handler died. Colby was always a lot calmer acting than the other one. I always thought Victor and Colby looked so funny together. A huge man with a little fluffy dog (though like you said, very masculine for a chin). Plus, he had a tendency to wear pink whether it be a tie or pants lol.
I'm not a 'toy' person either, ironically. I've come to love the toy spaniels though, especially the papillons and chins. Chins are wonderful dogs.

Answer:
Sporting G1 was James, the ESS.
Eh.. could have guessed.. blah.
Thanks, Laurelin. :)

Answer:
Hoping to see all of 2nd half of show tonight. The breeder/judge whose training class I work my dogs out of, made group. The Valcopy Toy Fox Terrier, but then got a pinch on collar somehow and let out a big squeek. My students Border Terrier didn't make group, but they say they're there having a blast. 70 degrees during daytime, 30 degrees at night. Excited to see how my breeders Dobie does tonight. Loved the Toy Poodle (Vicki), very familiar with her. Hoping a Dobie gets it, of course, but my guess is Vicki's going to take BIS.

Answer:
Someone asked if there was still going to be a show in Tampa. This is the AKC/Eukanuba show that was in Tampa. Moved to CA this year.
I wish they would show at least a little of the obedience. My instructor is competing. Is that not cool?

Answer:
Would love to see that!

Answer:
Oh! I know! I would love to see more obedience. They don't show enough of the dogs when it's just the conformation, one zip down the "runway" and onto the next dog. It's like, I want to see more and see them do more. LOL.

Answer:
Eh.. could have guessed.. blah.
Thanks, Laurelin. :)
Yeah, not a surprise there. ;)

Answer:
I have heard that it will be in CA for the next five years or so. Anyone know if that is true?

Answer:
Even Buzz is too big for my taste. I like the leaner Labs, with a bit less bone, a slightly narrower head and a little more tuck. I don't want a Whippet, mind you, but I don't think they should look like off-color Rotties with tails either.

Answer:
Buzz has done great tough RD, so there must be something everyone loves in him :) i personally think thats how a lab should look. but i see what you mean!
my two fav groups are on today! herding and working

Answer:
Watching night 2 right now!!! :D Coming up is the Working! :D Then Herding!!!

Answer:
i think i seen a smooth collie in the line up of the herding group!
yippee

Answer:
i think i seen a smooth collie in the line up of the herding group!
yippee
YEP!!! :D and SO many more of my fav breeds! :D

Answer:
cant wait!

Answer:
The lab also looked really stocky and stubby to me. Is that how they are supposed to look these days???

Answer:
for the show ring, yes

Answer:
WHAT part of Cali!?!?!? :D :D :D

Answer:
Long Beach....southern Cali

Answer:
oooooo, Dulce, you're from Cali! Which part?

Answer:
I didn't like the judge's short list for the working group. I cannot BELIEVE she placed that Neapolitan Mastiff. That dog could barely stumble around the ring. What happened to Neos being athletic guardians? :( The Portie seemed like a nice dog though I know next to nothing about that breed. Handsome Rottweiler.

I love Glory the Pyrenees, though. She was my favorite in the group.

Answer:
Terriers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer:
Omg The Staffy Is Groegous!!!!

Answer:
I agree RD!!!

Answer:
i love fox terriers, and parsons :)

Answer:
OOOOMGGGGG!!! :D :D :D They said they get a BAD RAP!! omg the judges are GREAT! Did you hear that?!?!!

Answer:
they nearly always say that... especially on animal planet, or at a dog show ;)
sorry...
announcers @ dog shows annoy me :lol-sign:

Answer:
i love the smooth fox terrier

Answer:
I'm just waiting for them to say that Border Collies are wonderful family pets. They say that every time, too.
I love the Airedale.

Answer:
me too RD... I think that's my fav. out of this group.
yuck an IAMs commercial... :p

Answer:
Well it's true what he said about the Staffies...you can't argue that...

Answer:
OMG here we go....!!!!!!!! Ok I voted for the Staffie :D

Answer:
aww i have never seen an australian terrier before. they are soooo cute!!!!

Answer:
Ok no one cares about the Staffies. I'll just share my excitement with myself.

Answer:
that min bull terrier is all puppy :lol-sign: :D sooo cute, he was soo happy and bouncy lol
that was great :o
How are the announcers going to compare the scottie to Bruce Willis? wtf LOL

Answer:
oh yeah! he was having a blast!
ewww a dandy dinmont. lol... geez i dont like the looks of them. the crowd sure did though

Answer:
Dandies are such odd looking dogs . . . They have adorable faces, it's just hard to see them through the weird hairdo lol.

Answer:
looks like they would fall over!

Answer:
Ok the winners are coming up. I'm SOOO FREAKIN excited.
I doubt they'll win tho :( That Giant Sch was cute!

Answer:
i am no judge by any means! but i am rooting for the smooth fox, or the mini bull :)

Answer:
I loved the Mini Bull, too, but my vote definitely goes to the Airedale. :) He's what I picture when I think of an Airedale.

Answer:
Ohhhh my..I KNEW IT!!! Yayayaayay
UGLY cut, but cite anyway, I like the smooth Fox :D

Answer:
I can't wait for the next group !! :D

Answer:
YAY Herding is NEXT!!! I cannot WAIT to see the BC! :D

Answer:
Why are the judges always so old? I mean, some of these people are decrepid!

Answer:
It is almost on! lol

Answer:
Wait..Poodles are herders????

Answer:
Dulce, that's really mean.
they aren't doing the herding group just yet ;)

Answer:
Wait...what's going on??? Are we not in Herding??

Answer:
Dulce, that's really mean.
they aren't doing the herding group just yet ;)
I'm glad you think so, thank you. This is my thread :)

Answer:
Labs should be fairly stocky and sturdy. (It's not about "these days") They need to be able to bust through heavy brush as they're used for upland hunting as well as water retrieving. They are bred from Newfoundlands so you see where their stockiness and blocky head comes from. I guess it's personal taste. I like 'em that way. My Lab was fairly stocky. Her mother wasn't so much but her father, a Canadian and America champ was very stocky, sort of short and a blocky head. Gorgeous, well tempered dog and a wonderful working hunting dog. Her mom was a field trial winner and she had a little snippier head and a very exuberant and happy personality. Bonnie came out looking somewhere inbetween and had quite a laid back and sweet disposition.

Answer:
I know that Labs from British lines are bred BIGGER, stockier, big boned...
OMG THE dalmation is BEAUTIFUL!

Answer:
calling people "decrepid" is not what I call nice at all JMHO
:lol-sign: this is "your" thread...
They're doing 'Best Breed By' btw

Answer:
Well, I started it so if you on't like it, don't read it.
And it was a joke, get over it :)

Answer:
LOL. I just scooted in to see what was going on and there was a Deerhound. I thought..."Oh...hounds." Then a Norfolk Terrier came on and I thought, "hounds????" ROFLOL. That's when I deducted they must be doing BOB.

Answer:
*waits patiently for the herding group*

Answer:
 kids :D
maybe next time out a smiley by your 'jokes' so stupid people like me (that's how I feel like your talking to me btw) can tell a difference...
Can't wait for the herding group! It's my fav. group!! :D
I want to see the GSD... even though I know I will be disapointed ...

Answer:
As usual, I didn't care for the Siberian. Big surprise.

It was nice to see the Anatolians actually working, though.

Answer:
aww... this agility clip is going to make me cry ! :o

Answer:
That was cool.

Answer:
Did anyone else think the Schnauzer earlier looked lame?

Answer:
Dulce, the judges on many of these shows on TV are old because they are the best. They have been involved for VERY long time and KNOW their breeds. What would you like more? A judge that is young and good looking yet seriously lacking in dog knowledge when compared to the old ones, or a "crippled" one that will pick the best dog?

Answer:
niether one of those collies looked good to me :(

Answer:
I agree, Tessa.
omigosh - I thought for sure that the rough collie handler was going to fall over...

Answer:
The aglity clip really got to me too.
It really goes to show how people can really help dogs, but dogs can help people.
"Agility for a cause, and a good one at that."

Answer:
agh, im for real! i am so dissipointed!
they looked dull! the rough didnt have a coat, and the smooth just was dull and didnt look good to me at all. grrr

Answer:
No kidding!
Summitview: Yeah, that Schnauzer wasn't moving right at all.
Did anyone else think the BC moved like a Golden? :(
The Aussie was nice; out of Bayshore though--strictly show kennel.

Answer:
Brattina--I'm not a kid. Now who's mean? :)

Answer:
--- edited out -- :)
...we talked on AIM for those who think we're haters :lol-sign:

Answer:
Zoom I didn't see the herding group. I just watched working and then got back to work. Watching the herding group usually makes me more angry than watching the working group, so I just skipped it tonight.

Answer:
aww :D the GSD took group... actually a lot better looking than some of the American CH's I've seen recently...
I liked the clip on the military dogs... so touching...

Answer:
That Border Collie was all bone and coat. Beyond that, there wasn't much to be proud of.
I actually wasn't too disappointed with the GSD. A little spindly for my taste but she was athletic in her movement and didn't flinch at the slightest noise like the one on the National Dog Show.

Answer:
From GSD people I know, they're not too fond of the GSD on there. I don't know GSDs though, and tend to not like American show types.

Answer:
She at least wasn't walking on her rump, but her hocks were still waaay too low for my taste. Did anyone catch that quick clip of herding dogs doing their jobs? they actually had a GSD running sheep, and the dog looked like NOTHING that's currently in the show ring.

Answer:
The GSD was a Dallas daughter. I don't care for American show line GSD, and didn't like her. But I will admit she is better than a lot of what I see, personally.

Answer:
I wasn't wild about her either - I honestly don't like any of the show line GSDs, whether they be American, German etc. None of them look truly agile or athletic to me . . . I still will never understand the purpose of that flying trot.
I know nothing about Springers but James is a pretty dog.

Answer:
It is on right now and I am watching it on Channel 43. Waiting for the commercials to go away...lol

Answer:
YAY! THE cocker won!!! WOO HOO!

Answer:
That drop eared skye terrier was unusual. Is it proper to call it a phalene like the announcer said? I doubt it, the breed club just calls them drop eared. The one announcer was kind of BSing a lot of things he said. Loved the part about the judges not knowing which dogs were the top dogs. xD

Answer:
That's a Springer, not a Cocker.

Answer:
Uhm... That was the English Springer Spaniel.. not a cocker.

Answer:
YAY! THE cocker won!!! WOO HOO!
Ummm... English Springer.

Answer:
cocker?
wasn't he a springer spanial???

Answer:
That's what I meant. I was tlaking to someone who has a Cocker at the same time I typed that. I got confused LOL!
Exuse me Bill Nye the Science Guy

Answer:
God you guys, Get over it

Answer:
sorry.. I typed before I saw any responces.. :p
we just all kinda jumped at once.. lol

Answer:
im pretty happy that the springer got it :)

Answer:
Ya I guess..geez..:(

Answer:

Beautiful Boxer! I remember seeing 'Monroe' at another Eukanuba show on TV.
Akita has great standard...
Sherman is one ADORABLE and AWESOME STANDARD Mastiff...very playful, too.Love how he places those big paws :D
Traveler the Bullmastiff looked like a Dogue De when they covered up his head.
Beautiful Pyrenesse.
The Mountain Dog is adorable...kind of small though.
Beautiful Newfie!
Chris the Saint Bernard is just the cutest running around the agility ring, being an 150 pound dog he is sooooooo adorable!!! ^^
Ehhh here comes the commercial..
YAY! THE cocker won!!! WOO HOO!
Oh yea thanks for spoiling it for me ;)

Dulce, instead of getting all bent out of shape for people merely responding quickly and not knowing if someone had already corrected you for your simple mistake of saying the wrong breed name, just say "oops". There is absolutely no reason to be rude.
I'm not sure I'm that happy about the springer. I don't know much about them, but my friend who is very involved in springers and holds many of my same beliefs says she doesnt' like him and is not impressed.. so... I'd have to say I wished some other dog woudl have gotten it.. like the PBGV or the PWD.

PBGV was my pick. Fairchild is a doll. Just adorable. Though, I'm picking based on cuteness alone lol.

Answer:
I know nothing about PBGVs but Fairchild was my pick as well. :)

I liked the germand shepherd...wonder why? :D :p

We weren't making a big deal, we just all posted at the same time.
Accidental...
ETA: See, like RD and I just now posted at the same time?

Answer:
I was thrilled to see the Neo place in working. I loved seeing some people that I know out there with their dogs. I can't say I am thrilled about the Springer though. I really wanted the Tibetan!

Answer:
Did I not JUST say that posting at the same time wasn't a problem!?
Yes, I believe so. I really don't care. We're just chatting about dogs! I'm not mad, you guys just get extra touchy.

Answer:
guys it's not that big of a deal lets just let it slide, before a huge pointless debate starts burning up this thread!
now back on topic...
my neighbor, whom goes to dog shows said she knew some of the handlers and dogs in the ring! she even knew James, the springer who won. she also knew the terrier winner, don't remember what breed though... like somthingham terrier?? :p ok I admit defeat... what was it?

I am so slow in posting! Whose Golden won the Bred-By class before herding started? I agree about the Tibetan, Showpug!! And whose from Long Beach? I was born there, St Marys' hosp. Whose making guestimates on BIS? I'm still guessing Vicki's taking it.

Herding right now... Old English should get this!!

Answer:
OMG, otch1. My mom was born at the same hospital :D
/random
I'm not from Long Beach but I'm very familiar with the area.

Answer:
That is very cool! Haven't been back to Long Beach for a very long time. Darn it! Jimmy Moses always cleans up. Was sure that OES got it.

Answer:
OTCH1- Laurie Jordan Fenner's Golden won BBE. Good looking boy! :D
As for the springer winning BIS...I'm not exactly thrilled. He's beautiful, yes, but if you talk to people in Springers that breed is in a LOAD of trouble in terms of aggression problems- and a lot of them date back to Condor, who is featured prevalently in our BIS winner's lines.
Unfortunately Condor features prevalently in EVERYONE'S lines these days- it's nearly impossible to have a pedigree without him in it. A real shame considering he was known to be aggressive. I don't know how factual the following information is (so take it with a grain of salt), but according to one person I know in Springers, Condor sired an entire litter of puppies that suffered "Springer rage" and had to be put down very early in life.
It would make for very interesting research, that's for sure. However, I doubt this kind of information is all that easy to come by, for obvious reasons.

Answer:
I wanted Harry Potter the Cardi to win! Gawd he is precious. =) Either him, or the PBGV.
I am just disappointed in American show GSD's in general... They never ever wow me like a working GSD does, it just doesn't seem right. Especially since GSD's win the herding group often.

Answer:
It seems a little harsh to me to give James a bad name because one of his ancestors may or may not have had aggression issues. Don't we always say that all dogs are individuals? Is James known for aggression issues? If not then I think he deserved his win. Congrats to him.

Answer:
So, most of these dogs are rejects? I wonder why they're even bothering showing them at all.
There are two breeds which I never gave much thought about which I think are adorable looking; the Border Terrier and the Norfolk Terrier....with the little drop ears. Soooooooo cute.

The border terrier on last night was precious.

What I am saying is that the ENTIRE LINE dating BACK to Condor is considered to have issues with aggression. Not JUST Condor. Basically, the breeding program. Yes, dogs are individuals, but when we look at what a dog show IS (an evaluation of breeding stock), what we are saying is that the animal that wins represents the BEST breeding stock we could possibly have. If I had an ENTIRE LINE of Shibas with human aggression you can bet your britches I'd be taking my program in a different direction.
The major problem Springer people are having is human aggression in show lines- pretty bad considering a HALLMARK of sporting breeds is their friendly, loving nature, and devotion to human counterparts.

Answer:
Why would any responsible breeder continue breeding dogs with known aggression issues? So you're saying that James, his sire and dam, their sire and dam and so on ALL have aggression issues? Is that what you mean by line? Sorry, I don't know much about breeding and shows. I'm surprised that the other people in the breed wouldn't make a stink about it if that were true. My first dog as a kid was an ESS bench and I love the breed. If what you're saying is true then I am truly appalled at how low some breeders can be. From what I've read I thought they were trying to be very selective about breeding to get rid of the aggression. It kinda tugs at your heart when you hear something bad about one of your fav. breeds I guess. Sorry if I was at all snippy in my earlier post. I'm just trying to understand the situation a little better.

Answer:
James the Springer was beautiful

Answer:
I was thrilled to see the Neo place in working. I loved seeing some people that I know out there with their dogs. I can't say I am thrilled about the Springer though. I really wanted the Tibetan!
Me too. I was screaming with glee when the Neo and the Boxer placed. Finally a judge with good taste! :D

Answer:
Monroe, the boxer, is stunning in real life. She's really showy and a crowd pleaser. I was rooting for her in working.

Me too. My whole family was. We're a fan of Boxers - as you can see, we have 2 of them! I was also rooting for the Neo. You have seen Monroe in real life? She is named after where I live. :D

No big deal Georgygirl- I'll PM you the rest so I don't hijack the thread anymore. :)

I adored the old english!

Answer:

Answer:
So was I the only one that thought that that Neo's movement was horrible!? :(

Answer:
Tessa, NO. I was disappointed in that dog, but that's the way most Neos are now. :( I liked the old Neos, that looked more like Cane Corsos. They still had that neo look, but they weren't horribly clumsy. They were supposed to be an athletic breed . . . :(

Answer:
The ESS was a beauty! :D
Tessa, to me the Neo looked like it had WAY to much skin and looked like a Shar-Pei in it :p
OMG the Golden took Best in Breeders! :D YAY!

Answer:
I'll be unpopular for being contradictory, but I just had this conversation with a friend/ AKC judge, judging Neos at a show last month. They are by no means an athletic breed. They were guard dogs. They are massive, body slightly longer than it is tall. They are to have a "beastly" look to them with lots of folds of skin. Their gate is lumbering. This is the traditional standard. She had a debate with an exhibitor. Two in a class, one true to standard, the other she said had such a beautiful gate it glided across the floor. She said it was clearly the more attractive dog of the two. But she had to place the first dog. After the class the exhibitor was clearly upset and said something. She had to pull her aside and say, "believe me if I could have placed your dog I would have. She is beautiful, BUT she is not true to standard." Neos truly are an unattractive, lumbering, beastly looking dog! A real dilema for judges.

Answer:
Are they supposed to look like they're going to fall over when they move faster than a walk? What good does that do to a guard dog? I can understand the look, but shouldn't it just be a "illusion" and not the reality?

Answer:

Neos actually are not suppose to be movers and they really are not suppose to be that athletic. That is a very common misconception. People expect balance and grace from all dogs and that's just not what the Neo is about at all. This breed is suppose to ward off intruders by the shock of the way it looks. The Neo should always be judged on head and wrinkle above all else. The head and wrinkle of the Neo is suppose to be massive and very intimidating. I thought the Neo was very correct from everything I have researched.

That is what I just wrote before I read your post! Correct...what you said is what I have always understood the breed to be.

Answer:
Good point. Unfortunately, their gate, if not true to breed, is a fault. Like the Pekenese, Basset hound, Bulldog, OES, and others, they have a very distinct gate that does appear to be disfunctional if chasing an intruder over a gate. In reality, if I met with that head coming around a corner at night, I'd keep going wrether it chased me or not. Lol

They would guard with their looks alone, not by chasing and tackling etc. The purpose of them is to ward off intruders by the way they LOOK!

Answer:
That's interesting, Showpug and Otch. I always thought that Neos were actual guardians rather than just visual deterrents. Why have they changed so much over the years, though? I have read a bit on the history of the breed and the old Neos were muscular and fit-looking while still being massive and intimidating.
I don't expect them to float like Whippets. However, when the dog repeatedly stumbles over its own feet and nearly falls over while turning around, I think something is wrong there. I don't care what breed it is . . .

Answer:
They are guardians, but their main defense is the "shock and awe" of the way they look.
"The Italians purposely created a dog to amaze and astonish the on-looker, and consequently the Mastino looks and moves like no other dog. Many say that the Neapolitan Mastiff's fantastic wrinkle and head, massive bones and lumbering movement create an astonishing animal whose looks are often enough to deter an intruder."-Pulled from the Westminster Kennel Club website for breed information.

I agree.
