Labradoodle Anyone?Question:Our local shelter just got in 40 lab/poodle cross puppies :yikes: They are all being put up for adoption tomorrow. They came from a woman who's breeding program got out of control and she couldn't handle all her dogs so she sent them to the humane society. Luckily they have all been spayed and neuterd. I hope they all get adopted! I wish I could take on another dog right now:( Answer: i dont even understand people who buy these cross breeds in the first place. They dont look right. Downs syndrome looking. lol theirs quite a few peeps on here who have bought labradoodles (dr2little, rubylove, etc) i wouldnt say they look bad or anything and i think their quite sweet looking, its just the breeding that bothers me, not the dogs themselves :D Answer: Xyourloco .... What is Downs syndrome looking ??? Answer: I hope they all get adopted out :( That is so sad. Answer: i dont even understand people who buy these cross breeds in the first place. They dont look right. Downs syndrome looking. Wow, that was helpful... What does saying something that insensitive and thoughtless serve to add to this thread. I happen to adore my Labradoodle and don't appreciate your comment! I'm equally certain that familys of people who happen to have Downs syndrome would appreciate it even less. Dr. Down discovered triscomy 21.... he didn't have the syndrome , therefore those with the number of genes have Down Syndrome....they aren't Down syndrome people , they are people who happen to have Down Syndrome. and yes , they are as cute as Doc's dogs !!! I'm glad the rescue got ahold of them early; hopefully the worst is behind them. 40 puppies?? Holy cow, BYB or puppymill ?? Answer: It's a shame the BYB was out for the almight $$ , but I hope 40 people will have the wonderful babies in their homes soon .... and spay and neuter !! Answer: OMG! Dr2little! You're adorable and your dog is adorable. What an adorable picture!!! You know...I've always thought mixing dogs was a horrible thing to do. After all, there are a lot of mixed breeds in shelters that need homes. And I always thought that responsible breeders are the ones who promote health and reduce genetic problems by being careful. But after doing some study (not a huge amount yet) and reading about the domestication process, evolution, some biology, I have come to have mixed feelings about mixing breeds together, such as Labradoodles. When purebred dogs are bred, selected from the best of the best, (and there aren't that many) that limits the gene pool and that very thing IS what causes genetic defects, (not breeding dogs with defects necessarily, but just the fact that they're relatives causes defects) that are so prevelent in our purebred dogs. Their life spans are getting shorter and they are in big trouble. When an outside dog with no chance of relatives anywhere back there is introduced, there is a wider variety of genes and this reduces mutations. (hip, eyes, elbows, all the diseases etc, etc) When there is a champion somewhere back there, everyone and their brother is bred to it and all those offspring are bred together. It doesn't matter that they're line bred and not inbred. It's not enough to stop this genetic drift or whatever. So, while I still think some kind of caution or plan needs to be implimented, I'm beginning to like the Labradoodle for a breed. Now if someone starts getting too "responsible" and starts breeding only those few who are the creme of the crop, we're back with the same problem our purebreds are having. Sure, a dog with known defects should not be bred. But the large variation in background is a good thing. I met a Labradoodle where I went babysitting with my daughter and that dog hadn't had any training much. He was jumping up on me and just nutso. In about a half hour, I had him not jumping up for a greeting, going out the door more politely and not jumping up on the counters. LOL. He was so sweet and willing. He was beautiful too....just like yours, Dr2lilttle.....curly hair, muscular and sturdy and fairly tall. And that sweet, intelligent expression! Wow. Anyhow... I think they're great dogs. But that woman shouldn't have been breeding so many, probably all from just a very few. Answer: Doberluv, you know I love you, and now I love you even more! People who consistently lump Labradoodles in the same box as all the other doodle F1 crosses make me want to scream. The purpose for Labradoodles existence is clearcut and completely viable. If anyone bothered to read their history they would know this. Unfortunately the cross was SO successful and produced such a beautiful result that it became extremely popular, and then sparked the whole doodle craze, which makes me sick to my stomach. All I can say is that there are 40 people out there who are soon going to know the joy of having a Labradoodle in their lives. There is no dog like them - I'm not saying they are better than any other dog - just unlike any other breed I know. Oh, and if you happen to live in Australia, where they are a recognised breed, and where the breed originally started, then you get even better examples of this wonderful dog. I hate all the BYBs and puppy millers who took on this lovely cross and made it a money-making game. It is such a shame and has created years of heartache for those of us who have Labradoodles and believe wholeheartedly in the betterment of the breed and the ultimate recognition of the breed. Dr2Little - that baby of yours! OMG!! What a little honey and just like my Chester man as a pup, although with Ruby's face!! :D I can only imagine the kind of joy and antics you get from a baby with such mischief and pure innocent sweetness in it's face. Awwww...... :p Answer: My nine month old daughter has Down's Syndrome, and while that is not what this post is about, I find it so discouraging that someone on this forum would post that. The good thing is, is that the majority of us are sensitive and caring. I am sure your daughter is beautiful and a huge blessing in your life. Some people can be very cold and I am sorry for that. Please , please Google my daughter's blog ... Mauzy's Musings ...so much support there !!!! We were blessed with over 500 babies to adults with DOWN SYNDROME this year !! Even Mom's with babes in vitro who have been diagnosed . Please pm me if you need a Grammy of a wonderful boy , who happens to hav DS !! (( Hugs )). Awwww...... __________________ Chester and Ruby We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare, and love we can spare. In return they give us their all. It is the best deal man has ever made LOL Rubylove. Well??????How could anyone look at those faces and not see a huge cuteness factor? That is a scientific phenomenon (and term) and most, if not all mammals recognize and are drawn to the cuteness factor. (it's a survival thing) And when you peer beneath those dark eyes, beyond the cuteness factor, when you delve into the depths of those pools....Viola! You see the deep look, the thoughtful and intelligent look. LOL. Seriously, your little dumplings are adorable too. Do you have more pictures? Grammy, (((hugs)))) and a (((hug))) for your little dumpling. Answer: I love Kosmo :) I wish i were closer.... Answer: Doberluv, Rubylove...and everyone else who said such nice things about Sophie....thank you all, I love her so much.:) I wanted to be clear about how I feel about BYB's and puppymills producing F1 doodles (like Ruby referred to) for $$$. I'm as against it as any other educated dog lover and in no way support this practice. I volunteer for a site dedicated to these mixes and it saddens me to see them in this position. That's the reason that I researched and knew Sophie's breeder for 2 years (in Australia) before deciding to take the plunge. It was the best decision that I ever made....:) Ruby....Echo Doberluv, we need more pictures please..:D Answer: Doberluv, Rubylove...and everyone else who said such nice things about Sophie....thank you all, I love her so much. You're welcome. It's easy to say. I can see how you love her in your picture and in all you write. What does it mean, F1 doodles? Answer: Thanks Dober !!! You have no idea what joy and appreciation of life Nash has brought into our lives. As Chaz has broadened my appreciation of all breeds , Nash has broadened my appreciation of all special babies given to special parents . Yup !! I WAS a snob many years ago ... who would want a cur !! Who could love a disabled child ! Boy , how I've learned in the last 50 years !! Luckily my dogs through TDI taught me that every being has a reason . Well , I knew before Chaz , that every dog is special , but it sure has been re affirmed here . Answer: Doberluv, I believe it means a breeding between a poodle and a lab (first generation), as opposed to breeding Labradoodle to labradoodle :). ~Tucker Answer: Yes ... we've gone through this many times . Australian Labradoodles are nearing acceptance ..... several generations of breeding and a standard . Unfortunately the interest here is BYB or mills .... leading to the 40 at the HS. If I took the mixture of what ended up being a Golden Retriever and bred them could I call them a Golden ? Of course not ! Unfortunately , the next 10 years will be interesting . There are so many " designer breeds " .... and those trying to establish a new recognized breed . With each one , the puupy mills and the BYBs will fill the HS . Let's face it folks ... more families have dogs rather than kids today . What happens down the road ?! With divorce approaching 50 % .... most of the kids are spit in half and the dogs go to new homes . Sorry , it sickens me ! Answer: Squirts mom, sorry that you had to read such an insensitive comment. (((((Hugs))))) to you. Bubba, Nash's face is priceless. I love the video. What a sweet boy, and what love for him just shines from his parents faces. Though the uncalled for remark earlier, I really appreciate seeing how the people on this thread just rallied around the ones rightly offended , and such nice, kind things shared, about Nash, about dr. and Sophie, and ruby and her pups. I am new to this site, and I must say I was a bit discouraged when I first arrived, with alot of insensitive comments, and rudely presented opinions. Thanks all, and Dober too, for showing another side to Chaz. I have a goldendoodle, now 11 mths old. We are absolutely taken by him (Herbie). He is an amazing puppy, and we adore him. The combo of the qualities of the golden retreiver, and the standard poodle, have brought together such a wonderful combination, that we love! He is the most affectionate, easy to train dog that we have ever had. Herbie's picture at 9 mths old is in my profile. if you want to see what he looks like. His father was a silver standard, so he was black and has been turning charcoal,silver/white. Showpug, thanks for sharing the pics of the dear puppies, and I am hoping they all find a loving home. Answer: BSan ... ( Hugs ) to you for posting !! Welcome here and please stay on !! We have so many caring people here for all causes . The Chaz site is really amazing !! Give Herbie a hug from me and a slobbery lick from Ollie . Will look forward to your future posts . Answer: Oh dear!! I want I want!! If only.. sigh.. I do hope they all find great homes.. they really are such beautiful puppers.. Answer: I believe it means a breeding between a poodle and a lab (first generation), as opposed to breeding Labradoodle to labradoodle . Ah-ha...I see. Well, so it's a fixed breed in Australia now, or just about? But you know what will happen...down the road, somewhere in the future, the same ones will be bred. The very best will be bred over and over again. Pretty soon, there will be no escaping it. Relatives will be bred together. And then the mutations start popping up, the genetic diseases. Now....if a little ways down the road one of these dogs is bred to a dog who cannot possibly be related, that will diversifiy the genes. If that is done every so often, the mutations will be less frequent. So, standards have been made for all these many breeds for a reason....to create breeds with individual characteristics and of course, the standards have had to be adhered to in order to have the 400 or so breeds we have at our disposal. However, those standards and that uniformity is a catch 22. We want the various breeds, but we're going to start seeing a lot of destruction of the breeds on account of the genetic diseases we've created by this uniform, selective breeding, this repeated breeding to relatives generation after generation. The further we go in time, the less diversity we have. That's just pure mathematics. And that's trouble looming for purebred dogs. I just wonder if by using more than one breed to make a mix breed (not a fixed purebred) ...taking a Poodle and a Labrador most of the time when making a Labradoodle wouldn't be (ironically) better for the dogs. They may not have quite the uniformity, but they'd come from a more diverse gene pool and would have a better chance at escaping the genetic drift phenomenon which causes the mutations which cause the many genetic diseases or anatomical problems our dogs have. I do hope scientists come up with a solution for breeders because if something isn't done, I'm afraid for the future of the purebred dogs. And if there isn't a standard, then again......what happens to the individual purebred dog breeds? It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Does that make any sense? Clear as mud, huh. LOL. Answer: Squirts mom, sorry that you had to read such an insensitive comment. (((((Hugs))))) to you. Bubba, Nash's face is priceless. I love the video. Dr2, you have a VERY cute doggie there! Answer: ..you too huh Showpug? Is she cute or what? Answer: ((((Squirtsmom)))) Answer: Showpug, that lil Ivy is awful cute too! Answer: For those of you who are interested, the breed history and breed standard for the Australian Labradoodle can be found at http://www.ilainc.com/IALA/AboutTheLabradoodle.html ;) Answer: Dober , this is food for thought . After owning my beloved Goldens for over 60 years and now to hear from many here saying they are biting and growling really bothers me . When I have gone to our Indy Golden club meetings , I never see any of this . I would say that a least 3/4 of the members show and/ or breed . I hate to see this breed ruined . Answer: Aw look at this sweetie they have. http://www.oregonhumane.org/dogs/detail.asp?animalID=49371 Answer: I was made aware of these babies a few days ago and also saw this on the news tonight. A client of mine is making the drive to go see them. I'm hoping they adopt one and it will them come visit "auntie otch" whenever they have to go out of town. Dr2, your dog's beautiful... another one, like your Brussels. that I have "puppy envy" over. Lol! And Grammy (if it's o.k. to call you that as I'm still relatively new here) you have an amazingly "open" heart. Always positive and kind. Your kids and animals are lucky to have you. Answer: wet nose and a Herbie hug back to you Bubba! Answer: oops! time flies! been having some late nights since I began on Chaz. Time to catch some zzzzzzzzzzz's Answer: Xyourloco .... What is Downs syndrome looking ??? you guys seem to have taken it the wrong way. It's the internet... everyone these days seems to. They have droopy eyes and they look depressed... they just dont look right "to me". In the newspaper ad's there's TONS of labradoodle's up for sale and they stay up for sale for months. I dont understand why there are so many in my area with such little to no demand. It's becoming a "fad" for most. There are those few who really love the breed for what they are and not because other people think they're "neat". Like Dr.2little and the others on this board. My hat goes off to them... But as i stated earlier, i dont see the need of cross breeding like this excpet for people to make money off the dogs. :( Thats just my opinion. When i speak I can be very blunt, I dont sugar coat things. (why should I) I get right to the point and dont lie about most things. If i dont like someone I'll tell them in their face. Thats just who i am.. I dont go around "acting" like i like someone or something. You guys might have taken it that i meant "the dog looks retarded". That is hardly the case. When did i ever say it looked like a kid with downs syndrome? I simply stated like it had downs syndrome qualities. I swear people take someones statements and totally change the context. Downs syndrome isnt a "person" it's a syndrome with distinct qualities. If i offended anyone, than i apologize. It wasnt my intentions. Answer: Well that took some guts to come back here and apologise after everyone got so upset - and rightly so. It was quite an offensive comment. But it's often hard to get your true intentions across in the written word, on an internet forum where nobody knows your face or your intonation or your intentions. So I'm pleased you came back to explain. If you have a look at the link I provided earlier, the need for cross breeding like this is pointed out quite clearly. However, that is only in the case of the Labradoodle - the other doodle mixes I couldn't agree more are simply produced for profit and nothing else. Answer: you guys seem to have taken it the wrong way. It's the internet... everyone these days seems to. They have droopy eyes and they look depressed... they just dont look right "to me". Downs syndrome isnt a "person" it's a syndrome with distinct qualities. If i offended anyone, than i apologize. It wasnt my intentions. I'm glad you came back to apologize too. We often say things without thinking and don't take into consideration how our comments could affect some people. To refer to a dog as looking downs syndrome was I'm sure quite the insult to those who have downs syndrome children or grandchildren. Yes downs syndrome is a syndrome and not person. But the syndrome defines the person. There are little faces behind the syndrome that are indeed real people. So, as you can imagine... it upset some people. It is hard to understand how comments are meant online. I too can be blunt at times and not candy coat things... but I try real hard to read my comments and try and view them from another person's perspective to see if they would be found offensive. And just for the record... downs syndrome people have the outer canthus of their eyes that slant downward.. not exactly what I would call "droopy" and I don't think I've ever seen a depressed looking down syndrome child.. to the contrary, they are full of smiles most of the time. :D Answer: Wish I could post a picture of our Nash here !! The biggest most beautiful eyes and smile ! Answer: In an effort to establish and verify pedigrees for Labradoodles blood lines, provide ancestry of registered lines completely transparent to the public (no hidden in breeding or additional infused breeds), re focus the efforts of breeders on health testing previously untested lines, promoting Labradoodle to Labradoodle breeding with consistent results, and bring in new Labrador to Poodle only lines to widen the gene pool of top quality Labradoodles, organizations were established to monitor the formation of these incredible dogs. Interesting Rubylove. That's what I'm talking about.....the occassional, but monitored infusion of a Labrador and/or Poodle to Labradoodle breeding to widen the gene pool. Sounds like they're tring to prevent too much inbreeding or even line breeding by doing that....therefore, lessening the propensity to genetic mutations....defects. That's a systematic breeding program they've got going....pretty interesting. Yes, I think that breed has it's niche where there may not be another breed to fill. The temperament of the Lab and Poodle, the intelligence, the hunting/retrieving qualities which make them work along side man rather than a more independent type breed, the hypoallergenic and non-shedding coat, the sturdiness of the Lab.....it would make a wonderful guide dog for someone who has allergies or needs the non-shedding or less-shedding, whatever. I think they're really a nice breed which seems to be coming along as far as being a fixed type. Thanks for sharing that Rubylove. Answer: I wish that I could adopt one. I've wanted a labradoodle for a very long time <3 Answer: xyo, glad you came back to apologize. Check out/google Mauzy's Musings........... a very sweet website with wonderful pictures, and smiles :) Answer: Only four left on the list... Please tell me all the others have been adopted :D Answer: Wish I could post a picture of our Nash here !! The biggest most beautiful eyes and smile ! I would love to see pictures of him :D I think that children with Down's Syndrome are absolutely adorable! My friend has a sister with Down's Syndrome, she is so cute... especially when she interacts with my dogs! Answer: Thanks again folks !! Nash's Mom has read these posts and hopes to get on Chaz again soon . She'd better with Nash's Golden puppy joining the family next month !!!! There's a picture of Nash and my Ollie floating around here ....maybe a mod would post it . Grammy doesn't know how . ( DUH!) XYO ... truce . We all say things we wish we could take back ! I don't even use the word " retarded " anymore when refering to anything living . Mentally challenged . While I'm on my soapbox : Dr.Down didn't have the sydrome ....therefore it's not " Down's " ..... T21 was just named after him as he discovered it .( Steps down ...) Before I got Ruby I was a dedicated, no-nonsense GSD girl, and thought I always would be. Max asked the other night - when it comes time to get our next dogs, what should we get? Of course `rescue' was the first answer that sprang to both of our minds, but we thought for a while and finally said, `I would only get another Labradoodle'. Honestly, I wish that you guys could meet our dogs. They are amazing, there is no other word for it. I have never come across such plain joy in another dog. They are comical and cheeky, dignified and wise, intelligent and inquisitive, happy and so full of curiosity and enthusiasm - it's just a delightful combination of lovely traits that makes them what they are. And the low-shedding is such a bonus (especially after owning GSDs!!) They really barely shed at all, they need their faces clipped once every three months (if that) they are big but not too big, they are athletic and dextrous - so many things. And a joy (and I mean pure joy) to train. I know there's other dogs out there with all of these qualities too, I think all dogs are wonderful, but I am daily, more than once a day, reminded of what incredible creatures I have when a lovely combination of personality comes out in them - smart enough to open the back door and then silly enough to come barrelling inside and throw themselves at you for another cuddle - just pure delight, is the Labradoodle. I hope one day you all get a chance to interact with one for an extended period - you will be as enchanted as we are!! :D Answer: A-w-w-w...what a nice tribute and description. They do sound delightful! I wish I could meet your babies and Dr2little's too, of course. |
