Sick and tired of seeing this....Question:Not directed at you Boemy :) but......(its one of your quotes) They should charge a small adoption fee, as people who get free dogs often regard them as having no value. I am about sick and tired of seeing this and hearing this phrase, I got Chloe for free and I probably treat her better than people that get their dogs from a breeder.. Just because a dog is free, doesnt always mean that people regard them as having no value..:mad:Chloe means the world to me and NO ONE can tell me just because I did pay an adoption fee for her that I dont value her... Just because someone pays $500, $600 dollars doesnt mean they are going to treat their animals better well thats just ridiculous to think that.... *done now* Answer: I suppose you could take some of the celebrities who collect tiny dogs for instance lol... I wasn't trying to suggest that. There are plenty of people who love their free dogs, whether they be from someone else or a stray. It's just that there's a greater chance of attracting irresponsible people, people who would never dream of paying money for an animal. (For example, the people I lived next to in my last apartment building. Oh, the stories I could tell . . .) Also, some people try to get kittens and puppies for nasty purposes like feeding snakes or baiting fighting dogs and they're more likely to try to get free animals than to pay for them. I know, its just when that phrase is said, and there are people like me that try to and will do anything for their furry family members it kinda I guess makes me feel that I dont compare to other owners cause I didnt pay for Chloe.... you'll have to excuse me, I am being pissy and emotionally challenged all in the same day :D Answer: I've had days like that. :D Answer: i know a few people that get free to a good home puppies and kittens and feed them to there monitor lizards Answer: Jess, I hear ya girl. I didn't pay a dime for Kona and she is my baby! You know that as well as I do! Preach it girl :D Answer: Even though I did get Chloe for free, I got grilled with questions from the person that found her and her bro's and sis's.... Answer: Most of our cats were free (strays), three were from animal shelters, and both dogs were from animal shelters. Technically our second dog was free, as the first dog, I'm sad to say, had a seizure and died less than a month after we got her. She was only a year old, too . . . :( Anyway, my mom told the shelter people and they offered to waive the adoption fee if we decided to get another dog, which we eventually did. Answer: it's ok i feel that way sometimes too. i paid 25 for yoshi but she came with all her shots and she was spayed. i paid pretty much nothing for her but ilove her more than anything else. and some times i feel kind of bad when people say that Answer: I'm sure no one, when saying that, was directing it towards you, so honestly, I don't think you should take offense. I AM against dogs being given away for free, because most times they WILL end up with someone who doesn't care about them. I hate how people assume that of people who get their dog for free. A free dog be alot like finding a stray.....Isn't it free too? I AM against dogs being given away for free, because most times they WILL end up with someone who doesn't care about them. She never took offense from what I read  . Answer: Both Bluedawg and Verde where free to me. Before I got Verde I allmost got a Bull/boxer mix, but they wanted $200 for him. Apperently I might have had some roll in the dog being given away free, I would have taken him but I had committed to Verde. Answer: ive been one of those unfortunate people to see the results of many FREE puppies/kittens. ive known of a few taken and fed to large snakes and lizards Ive known of a few taken by animal abusers (one ended up at the vets office with fireworks shoved where the sun dont shine!) ive known of way too many hand up in the hands of Collectors who mean well and truly think there helping but when they have 300 dogs and 600 cats all multiplying...all because they were "free" and in need of a "loving caring home" and ive seen many find their way into the hands of animal testing labs who prefer to use free dogs and stays of mixed breed due to the larger genetic pool... Ive worked in shelters, vets clinics and pet retain since i was 10, and in the 11 yrs so far, of all the Free puppies and kittens ive known of only a tiny fraction ended up in solid caring homes. but i also dont think $200 is a reasonable adoptin fee for a pup with not health care no shots ect. $25-$50 to ensure the pup is not going to end up as reptile food, or end up in the hands of a collector who already has a house full of strays and free "Rescues" or to have those lab collectors looking elsewhere. unfortunatly there are WAY too many crazy/terrible people out there that "free" can attract. And unfortunatly the people giving away free pups and kittens are USUALLY not all that concerned with where they go. if the animal is going to be free and the people are going to grill the people interested then fine...but most people giving away free pups and kittens just want them gone and are willing to give them to anyone thats interested... Answer: hahaha thanks I need a laugh :spam: Answer: is there anyway to ban that one this is the 4th post theyve put that on its a little annoying lol. Answer: Anywho, thats really sad Foxy :( Its just that there ARE good caring loving people that want to give good stable homes to "free puppies/kittens" and its just sad that the idiots of the world have to give bad names to everything :( Answer: I got Samm for free and in no way see her having lesser value.. Answer: I am about sick and tired of seeing this and hearing this phrase, I got Chloe for free and I probably treat her better than people that get their dogs from a breeder.. ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee. Answer: ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee. I dont see whats so funny Answer: ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee. I have no idea how thats funny at all. Actually its pretty offensive sense alot of Chaz dog owners got their dogs for free. Kinda rude IMO. Answer: I have talked about them before............My neigbors that live in an upstairs apartment. They went out and got three YES......3. At the same time, same litter. 3 lab/shepherd cross pups, I knew it never would work out, but I also didn't expect the SHEER neglect that the pups indured for almost 2 months. Finally after many calls from other neighbors to the city police.....I started calling the humane society..... It took over a week for them to come to the home and they were handed over to them... they are now in foster and hopefully will end up in good homes. These pups were free giveaways, at one point animal control officers came to their home to pick them up, well it would have cost 40. for the owner to relinquish ownership to the pound...she couldn't afford that. The lady could not afford to put her pups in the pound....:yikes: They were all females too....... What were they thinking? Three dogs coming into heat at the same time.... mainly kept out tied to chains and tangled up not being able to move, and no water or food for days at a time. Some people just need a bash to the head........ Now with all those thoughts.... If the original puppy owners would have sold them for 25. a piece...... no these people wouldn't have gotten them, but whose to say they wouldn't have been treated just as badly in another home? I am not for or against charging for pups.......... I am for spay and neuter. And NO, don't get me wrong, some owners of free dogs treat them great...... but there really are more scum people that will go get a pup just because it is free......then neglect them or drop them off somewhere, or whatever. I have seen it time and again......with my own eyes. I also love and cherish my Charlie....... a freebie. Byb bred and the sole survivor of the litter during winter. The byb was so angry that the whole litter died......he told my husband to come get him.......he didn't want to mess with them anymore. He is also AKC registered. He could have easily ended up as a byb stud dog tied up in the backyard. He also gave both parents away to another byb, I think. :( My other dog Shiloh, we paid 700. for her and although they both are great retrievers she has other issues..... So I am just glad my freebie fell into a loving family!!.....Us. I hope that will be helpful to you on why you should not be offended when someone says that. Just consider yourself to be a great dog owner, and be proud of that.....no matter how much you did or didn't pay. :) Answer: ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee. Ummm . . . yes, some do. I don't see what's so funny either. You can't put a pricetag on love. Answer: ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee. With all due respect....... I don't think that is what she is saying at all. I think she is saying she is offended that some people catagorize her with a bad owner Because she got her dog for free. And again, I have seen people spend alot of money on a dog and it ends up neglected........ Then again as in my situation... my Charlie lives a great life and he was free. ;) Answer: I have talked about them before............My neigbors that live in an upstairs apartment. They went out and got three YES......3. At the same time, same litter. Ah, cut from the same cloth as my neighbors, I see. Yes, people like THAT are the main reason I'd warn against giving away dogs for free, unless you screen extensively. I had two sets of neighbors and neither set would have PAID for an animal, but they went through quite a few free ones. Neighbors #1: Had a supposedly indoor cat, but kept leaving their door + the door the outside open. Cat escaped, never to be seen again. Then got a free kitten. It got stuck on the roof of the laundry building. Other neighbors called animal control after Neighbors #1 refused to climb up to get the kitten down. Kitten ended up at local humane society. Neighbors #1 refused to pay the fee to get it returned to them. Then got a puppy (which they weren't supposed to have, it was a no-dogs building.) Fed it human leftovers, I presume because dog food was too expensive. Or maybe they were too lazy to buy it, who knows. Anyway, puppy had constant diahrrea. Their housetraining method was to shut it outside for hours at a time. IN WINTER. It was a short-coated puppy! I ended up bringing it in a few times. (It promptly peed in the hall each time. Poor puppy.) They also fed it CIGARETTE BUTTS as a "dewormer." I only found this out after they were evicted or I would've called animal control. Neighbors #2: Had an unspayed indoor cat. Again, cat escaped one day never to be seen again. They didn't check the humane society, put up posters, or do a **** thing to find her. Then got a hamster for free. Ended up breeding it. Hamsters and all babies got sick from something and died. Got a puppy. I took it to the vet and paid for shots + deworming myself, as I knew it would never get done otherwise. Now I wish I'd insisted on early spaying as well, as they ended up getting rid of it two weeks later and had no idea where it was when I asked. A week after THAT, one of them asked me where "that place was you were talking about." I didn't know what they were talking about. "You know, that place where low income people can get animals for free?" Oh boy, was I pissed. Yeah, like I'd really encourage them to get MORE animals they could lose or dump! (What I'd told them about earlier was a free SPAY/NEUTER clinic for low income people.) THAT is the kind of person you have to look out for. They would never pay for an animal, so with even a nominal fee, you're safe. (But of course not everyone who gets a free critter is like that.) Answer: With all due respect....... I don't think that is what she is saying at all. I think she is saying she is offended that some people catagorize her with a bad owner Because she got her dog for free. And again, I have seen people spend alot of money on a dog and it ends up neglected........ Then again as in my situation... my Charlie lives a great life and he was free. ;) Exactly, but since its soooo funny I guess it doesnt matter....:( Answer: And again, I have seen people spend alot of money on a dog and it ends up neglected........ Then again as in my situation... my Charlie lives a great life and he was free. ;) Very true. I have seen a three hundred dog starved to death in a neighbors backyard when I was younger. Money means nothing to some people. Answer: No it is not funny at all Jess..... Rocket cost over $10,000...with her training. Charlie cost over $0.00 with his training. And they are treated VERY equal. They both sleep in our bedroom.......they both eat the same food, they both sh*t the same place and in the same way. Cheer up........don't let it bother you.:) Answer: Bear was free. He was a foster pup that never left. My other two we're rescues that I paid an adoption fee for. I love them ALL equally and I treat them ALL the same. The fact that I paid money for the first two doesn't mean I treat Bear any less beacuse he was free. Either you love your dogs or you don't. Shelling out tons of money won't change that. (having said that, I always suggest chargeing some kind of adoption fee since bunchers will often take free dogs and sell them to research) Answer: Not everybody who gets a dog for free will mistreat it, but if someone is advertising a free dog, you will get more irresponsible people interested than if there was, say, even just a $50 adoption fee. Which is why I think there shouldn't be "free" dogs (though we all know that no dog is ever truly "free"!) Just a small fee is fine, I think most people looking to buy a dog would have no problem with $50. And if I were selling a dog for $50 and someone wasn't willing to pay that much, I certainly wouldn't let them have that dog. Answer: I have run into a few people who advertised their pet for $70 or $100 but the animal was actually free. Answer: ROFLOL!!!! So, you're saying that people who get dogs for free treat them better than those who get dogs from breeders? Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....tee hee hee.I dont see whats so funny I think why she's laughing is that you are doing the same exact thing that you accuse others of doing - making a blanket statement about a whole group of people. Your statement implies that getting a dog for free means it's treated better, a very generalized statement. What you're complaining about is another generalized statement, that paying for a dog means it's treated better. Neither statement is accurate, but in a way you have just insulted everyone who has bought from a breeder just like you felt insulted initially because someone implied a free dog isn't loved as much. Personally I think people are being too sensitive. I don't understand why anyone would choose to take offense to a generalized statement like that. I have both dogs that I got for free and dogs that I paid for. I love them all. It doesn't matter to me what someone says, I know I love them and they certainly appear loved! *L* I can understand why someone might think putting a monetary value on the dogs would keep undesirables away. Maybe it helps, but I can tell you I've seen a lot of expensive dogs and horses treated like crap, to the point of death at times. There are people out there who just shouldn't have animals. I would have given my horses away before I ever starved them, but I know of people in this area who let their horses starve to death because they refused to give them up. I think the most important thing is screening thoroughly before someone places an animal. I hate to see people expecting money for litters that really shouldn't have happened at all. If they really think they should put a fee on there because they want to weed out the undesirables, then it should only be enough to cover the vaccinations and hopefully neuters done prior to the pup leaving. OR they could donate all the money to the local animal shelter. But making a profit off of an accidental litter is no better than being an unscrupulous backyard breeder to me. Melanie and the gang in Alaska Answer: It is true that there are less people who could afford an animal for $1000 + to abuse or neglect. The right size puppy for $25 could still be a bargin for feeding a snake. Answer: I dont see whats so funny Well, that went over like a lead baloon. I meant no offense at all. I guess the irony went right over your head. You said you were sick of people with dogs from breeders which they spent money on thinking they took better care of their dogs, than people who got their dogs for free who they supposed valued them less. (or something along those lines) Then you turned around and said that you took better care of your free dog than most people with dogs from breeders who cost money take care of their dogs. (or something along those lines) This is saying the same thing but in reverse of the thing which you are getting sick and tired of. I was not offended that you thought you took better care of your free dog than I take care of my purebred dogs from breeders. Why would you be offended by my good humored gaffaw at your statement. I was only making an observation sprinkled with humor which I interpretted the way I did. I apologize if you misinteretted my meaning. Answer: Not directed at you Boemy :) but......(its one of your quotes) I am about sick and tired of seeing this and hearing this phrase, I got Chloe for free and I probably treat her better than SOME people that get their dogs from a breeder.. *done now* Read it again....I should I have put the word some in there but it was overlooked and for that I appoligize, and that was the ONLY generalized statement that I made... Answer: My mistake. Answer: My mistake. No it was mine, because I should've put it in the first time...and I didnt...I quoted myself and edited it in, to show what I meant to put..which was a serious overlooktion (is that even a word) anyway...it was mine... I hate generalization as much as everyone else, and I should have worded it differently :) Answer: overlooktion (is that even a word) anyway... No, an alternative might be "oversight." LOL. No problems... First of all, by all the other posts you've made, I couldn't possibly think you don't value your dog. I think most people love their dogs, whether they're mixed breeds or purebreds. There are always going to be those few who mistreat their animals and if they're that kind of mean spirited person, then it doesn't matter to them whether their animals cost them money or not. Abusive people are abusive people. Answer: The way I look at it is this: No matter if you have a lot of money invested in the purchase of the dog or not it is about how the dog is treated. I have personally seen people pay extravigent amounts of money on a dog, horse any type of animal and did not care for it properly. To me it is the principle of the issue. Get the animal because you are ready for that animal. Make sure that you have the funding to care for the animal. Please do not take that animal and abuse it in any form or fashion. If it were to beat it or kick it, is no worse than breeding the crap out of it. So either way if the dog or animal has been paid for great. Just love it unconditionally like he/she does you! Answer: I know there are a lot of people out there who take good care of a free dog or cat (like you, Jess). But there are also people who will take something "Just because it's free". There are real sickos out there who will tell all kinds of lies about what a good home the animal will have, then do all kinds of terrible things. For example, feeding to snakes. I know that it's sadly not uncommon for people with large reptiles to use free puppies or kittens as food. I remember a few years back, some kids were busted for cruelty. They were picking up free puppies and kittens (after telling copious lies about how well the babies would be taken care of), then attaching fireworks and such to the poor things for "fun". If just adding a $50 price tag helps discourage those who aren't interested in the pup's welfare, I'm all for it. I personally would never give away a puppy for free unless it was to someone I knew very well. Answer: Also, some people try to get kittens and puppies for nasty purposes like feeding snakes or baiting fighting dogs .....shiver Answer: Who would keep a creature for a pet that wants to eat kittens and puppies? Is this a special kind of mind? Answer: Who would keep a creature for a pet that wants to eat kittens and puppies? Is this a special kind of mind? :lol-sign: Yes, "special" is a lovely (and admirably restrained) word to choose! I can't grasp it myself ... but a lot of guys, who have more 'hunter' than 'gatherer' in their system, seem OK with this nasty side of the cycle of life. They'd as soon shoot a furry creature as pet it. Most women, by contrast, seem duly horrified... If it weren't for men I'd have to turn vegetarian, because I'd never be able to kill anything. Del. Answer: Yes, "special" is a lovely (and admirably restrained) word to choose! Believe me, it wasn't easy. Answer: i would always charge an asoption fee. just because people could take avantage of a free dog. seeling it to labs or whatever. but buster anf harry were both free. and they are loved just as much as any other dog Answer: Little Bimmer is my freebie. I drove 2 hours to get him, and the people he'd been dumped on talked to me for hours, asked me to stay for dinner and really got to know me . . . and you all know how I feel about Bimmer :) Answer: I adopted Smokey 4 months ago and everytime I tell someone that she is adopted, they always congratulate me for rescuing a dog that was homeless until I came along. Not one person has asked me what if anything it cost to adopt Smokey. I did pay $110 to the Rescue Shelter to help defray some of their costs ( they still lose an average of $800+ on every dog they have adopted). I think part of the adoption fee is to see if you are in financial shape enough to at least have some money to actually put down on the dog. They also have you fill out a form and ask questions like A) How much money would you be willing to spend on your adopted dog if it got sick and needed medical care at a vet 1. Up to $25 2. Up to $100 3. Up to $500 4. Over $500 5. I would send anything to get the dog cured. I think if you answer 1 or 2, they would tell you to go get a Gerbil or turtle or something. Seeing if a person is going to feel like they would invest money in the dog after they get it , to me , is much more important than how much they paid for it. Giving it away for free, as some other people have already mentioned, doesn't seem like a good idea to me...... I have seen two examples right here in the Condo complex where I live, of people getting puppies and not having or spending any money on the puppy. No collar and leash for instance, on one puppy was blamed on the family not having enough money to buy them..( I finally bought them a collar and leash one day and they never even thanked me for it) . They wound up getting rid of that puppy after a few months. Another family didn't get any of the shots and vet check that they should have for their puppy. It disappeared after about 3 months. As long as you have nitwits and dumbells adopting animals like that, these stories will happen over and over again. Charging some kind of fee for the adoption, in my way of thinking, would eliminate a few of these totally irresponsible people from getting their hands on a helpless dog. Is it a solution, no, but at least ot helps.. Answer: I have had free dogs. In fact, up until I got Ripley, all of my dogs were free or very cheap. Buster cost $25, Shiner was free (she adopted me) and Buddy was free (he found us). We loved those dogs as much as we love the ones that we paid a lot for. No more, no less. A dog is a dog. If a person only gets a free dog because that's all they can afford, then I don't think they'll be able to provide a good home for the dog (if they can't afford an adoption fee, what'll happen when the dog needs vet care?) Answer: If a person only gets a free dog because that's all they can afford, then I don't think they'll be able to provide a good home for the dog (if they can't afford an adoption fee, what'll happen when the dog needs vet care?) The point wasnt about affording the dog or not affording the dog :) (thats a whole other thread) :p Answer: I haven't read through this entire thread, so I'm sorry if I mentioned things that have already been said. An adoption fee does not ensure a better home... but more irresponsible people will reply to a "free dog" ad... I've heard of ads where there are "8 free puppies to good home" and one person will take them all and sell them to a lab. I've also seen first hand free dogs tied to chains in the backyard, and mistreated because they didn't cost anything. My fiancee's grandparents actually have a "free dog"- he lives in the backyard and eats Ol' Roy... they justify it because "he was a rescue and was free." I've also heard of kittens and small puppies becoming snake and monitor food. I think a small adoption fee of $25-$50 will stop most people from taking a dog "just because it is free." Also, maybe the owner could list the dog as having an adoption fee, and then waive it once they got to know and screened the potential owner. Just because a dog is free, it doesn't mean that everyone would treat it badly. I've seen $1000 dogs mistreated. I had to rehome a ferret because of allergies, and I listed an adoption fee. Once I found a family interested, I talked to them, and they drove an hour to pick up the ferret. I didn't take their money, because I knew he would be going to a genuine good home. |
