Just let dogs be dogsQuestion:Maybe its just me but i cant stand these "dog owners" that walk around with their dogs on a lead not interacting with it lookin all miserable like its a chore or something...are these people really enjoying their dogs and do they no that its a privilage to have the dog as their companion and how much that dog will give to them during its lifetime. My dogs ave never been on leads I'm not saying its wrong or anything but some people ave their dogs on leads and if they so much as try sniff another dogs butt or want to play or another dog wants to play wiyh their dog&sniff butts they start draggin their dog away and shouting at it,these are the things dogs do sometimes....just let dogs be dogs Answer: Just because a person is being responsible with a dog on a lead.... and not allowing to sniff another dogs butt... does not mean "we" are not enjoying our dogs. I hope you never run into an aggressive dog while walking your unleashed dogs..... I cannot count the times I have had problems with unleashed dogs that their owners had no control over. My dogs are always leashed while on our walks. I think leash laws are a good thing.... It keeps dogs under control. I just wish they enforced them more. Then I wouldn't need to be so concerned about approaching dogs while we are walking. I also carry pepper spray just in case I need it. That's just about what I was going to say but you said it better. :) Answer: Where i come from its not a must 2 have your dog on a lead but i think u might of missed my point. Is taking your dog for a walk a chore or a pleasure,im not saying having it on a lead is a bad thing at all.But some owners just dont seem to be enjoyin takin their dog for a walk&just ignore it and thats not right Answer: My point of veiw is. Im always going to shy away from a dog off lead. I don't know if that dog is friendly. And even if the owner says it is you just never know how that dog is going to react to mine or vise versa. Keeping my dogs on leashes is my security blanket. I always know my dogs are safe and with me. I don't want my dog to run up loose to someone else's dog and then a fight happen because that dog isn't friendly. Thats why dog parks make me nervous. I do think its annoying to see people walking their dogs like its a chore. But atleast they are leashed. Im more annoyed at the people who let their dogs run loose. Im not bashing you or anything im just saying my point of veiw. And dogs can be dogs on or off a leash. Yes that is annoying. Answer: I'm all for letting dogs be dogs, but surely if you are walking along a roadside you should use a leash in case of any distraction, traffic danger etc ?? My dogs ave never been on leads Answer: Jus to add to that my dogs are the softest things but just got thinking that maybe im putting them in danger of being attacted themselves by not having them on a lead but i wont appolagise for not leashing them if you could see them when we go on our adventures you might ave abetter understanding of that. My dogs have the best life&the most loving home....im not a bad person because of this. Answer: No one thinks your a bad person. Your just doing what you have always done with your dogs. Just like I do what I always have with mine. But your not a bad person. Not at all :). Answer: It sounds like you live in a built up place wher theres lots of people and dogs. I m lucky anough to live in an area wher we are surrounded by countryside and ive never felt it nessasary 2 leash my dogs.I just think its ashame wen people dont enjoy their walks with their dogs it should be a pleasure. If i go into the busy town and theirs a dog without a lead i will cross the road if possible 2 avoid the dog this is a situation where it is definatly appropriate 2 leash your dog.I wish i could of got my point across differently cause people on here now seem 2 think im a bad dog owner&really im not. my puppy dogs are the most presious things in my life Answer: I'm all for letting dogs be dogs, but surely if you are walking along a roadside you should use a leash in case of any distraction, traffic danger etc ?? Of course i do agree with that you shouldnt put your dog in danger i think i had gud intentions wi the point i wanted to make but maybe i cud of made it better Answer: It sounds like you live in a built up place wher theres lots of people and dogs. I do live in a city where there are strick leash laws and for good reason. That being said, I have to say that there is a difference between walking your dog and walking with your dog. Being a trainer, I understand the importance of leash manners and ensure that while in the presence of other dogs and people, they have good leash manners. I do however love being truly with my dogs during the walk. To me a walk is like sitting down to dinner with the kids at the end of the day. It's a time to communicate and enjoy eachother. I see many owners just "getting it over with", walking side by side with their dog but hardly together, and others who are obviously enjoying the time toghether. The leash itself has very little to do with anything but safety. I personally don't ever take my dogs off leash unless in a secured area and we have a ball on our walks. And yes, sniffing..weather it be other dog butts or the grass, is their version of reading the evening paper and to me is just plain good for the soul of a dog. I Knew wot i wanted to say but couldnt articulate it proply youve said exacly wot i wanted to say but 100 times better. Walksn are a time to spend quality time with your dog & bond Answer: If i didnt have Ruckus on a lead he would run away and right into traffic! I betcha I would never see him again if he got off lead. And there are dogs off lead that will attack your dog on lead. all dogs should really be on a lead. but i do understand what you are saying. If you are not on any roads, there are not any people around and lots of country side you wouldnt have to worry nearly as much about your dog being in danger off lead. but i would worry about him getting lost, or being attacked by coyotes or something It's okay, I am VERY bad with words myself:) Answer: I know what you mean. Personally depending on what mind frame I have while walking I don''t stop to meet other dogs. If I''m out for a stroll with my dogs then yes we will meet other dogs, but if we are on a walk, all of us are focused on going and we move at a quick pace. The dogs have learned to run to the end of the lead, sniff and mark before I walk past and get to the end of the lead cause i don;t stop LOL BUT it''s not that I''m dragging them anywhere they WANT to travel like that. Personally I think they dislike strolls because of all the stopping. Answer: If i didnt have Ruckus on a lead he would run away and right into traffic! Great idea! I take Ruckus out and I always see atleast two dogs running around off leash and i get so nervous! They were standing close, Ruckus wanted to interact with them soooo bad, his little tail was just wagging away, but i didnt let them interact because I was scared of the other dog fighing Ruckus. The other dog was not showing signs of agression, but I would no way risk it unless he was on a leash Answer: My mum always told me i should stop and think before i open my mouth...I should listen to her more often i think&take her advise!haha So...lets change the subject...ive also got a pet bird called bert&a snake called fang and you'll be glad 2 no i do put them on a lead Answer: There are a couple of people in my condo complex that have dogs that sit home all day long. Now these people finally come home from work, and go outside with the dog and sit on their fat butts on a chair in front of their condo with a long leash while the dog is now free to move about 15 feet in each direction and that is it. What really makes it funny is that these tubs of lard would benefit greatly if they would burn off a few thousand calories a day walking their dogs around, but they refuse to move ..... Sad for the dogs really...... Answer: There are a couple of people in my condo complex that have dogs that sit home all day long. Sad for the dogs really...... Aww thats not a life for the dogs its just an exsistance. The owners could probly do with the exercise 2.If i didnt have dogs i would probly be 20 stone i think its the best exercise&makes you feel nicer. My friend use 2 have a gorgeous german shep it never made it out of the front door ever(except wen he made a run for it on a couple of occassions)&who can blame him! its such a shame for the dogs in that kinda situation Answer: I didn't mean to seem rude in my previous post........ I live in a small town, with many loose dogs that cause problems. There is a leash law, but it cannot be enforced by our county animal control because their is no county leash laws.....only city. If a dog has his license tag on, the animal control officer cannot pick him up or give a fine. The city police could pick up the dog, or give fines for loose dogs in our city limits, but I believe that would be near last on their list of importance. When my dogs and I take walks in town it is more of a "training" exercise. They must follow leash rules, they must not go crazy to see another dog ect. ect. When we have walks on our 36 acres out of town or at our summer camp along the creek........ that is "play time" no formal restrictions and fun fun fun. And we also have lots of fun in our fenced in backyard. But I just don't permit the "fun" type of things while walking thru town, that could cause alot of problems, and I want them fully under my control in that situation. I hope you understand where I am coming from........ The more you post, the more I seem to understand the kind of thing you are talking about. :) Answer: Lizzie would go NUTS AND CRAZY on me if I did not train, play, love, walk, and groom her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yikes: I look at all the dogs that I see that NEVER get to go on walks and get loving on and they just look SOOOOOOO sad!!!!!! :( Those kinda people should NEVER be able to own a dog EVER!!!!!!!!! Lizzie loves it when she sees the leash because that means she gets to go some where and have fun with me (and most of the time treats are included!!! :p ) Also Like OC said I walk at a fast pace too and Lizzie would have it no other way b/c that is what she likes...to walk fast and keep a fast pace!!!! And that is fine with me because I love walking fast!!! Answer: I didn't mean to seem rude in my previous post........ I live in a small town, with many loose dogs that cause problems. Thats why i think this site is great people do have different opinions&stuff but they all share one common factor and that is they love their dogs and want to give them the best quality of life that they can,jus wish they all dogs were lucky enough 2 ave owners like the people on this site Answer: Lizzie would go NUTS AND CRAZY on me if I did not train, play, love, walk, and groom her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ohhh she knows it!!! :p She is spoild rotten!!!!! hehehe!! :p They do give you SOOOOO much!!!! I was reading some where that if an Older Person (Above 50 or 60 years old) Has a dog that they have fewer health problems and are not as lonley!!!! :D That is probably why my grandmother and grandaddy have VERY FEW health problems (they have 4 sweet standered poodles and 1 sweet lab) and they are.....I think 75 or 72??? :D Answer: Too funny Bobsk8! I have a neighbor who not only looks like you describe, but so does his poor dog, who appears to no longer even care to walk either. Heck, Tosca already made me lose five pounds since I got her. She wants to MOVE. Best thing that ever happened to me as I work at my computer for hours and hours and hours. A few more months of that and I would have a butt shaped like a chair! But alas, Tosca says, "C'mon Mom git off yer butt and lets roll! Of course I miss a few deadlines here and there but ah what the heck. What good is it, if you can't smell a few flowers with your dog? Answer: I know what you mean Loulou.. when you see people walking with their dogs all grumpy looking.. yelling at them if they do anything dog like.. it's like they expect them to be people or something! :p I like hearing people tell their dogs how good they're being.. praising them for what they're doing right and being happy with them.. I totally know what you mean.. I've see SO many people that just mope along.. like they'd rather be anywhere else in the world.. that annoys me too ;) Answer: I think I understand where your going with this LouLou. The leash thing is really not the issue, it's seems odd that when two people cross paths and both have friendly dogs that are leashed and under control, they act as if there is some 'unwritten law that forbids the dogs from greeting each other or even saying hello (which is the butt-sniffing thing) or they act as if it's a terribley rude and inappropriate thing to let their poor dog meet another of his kind! I can understand why people would be worried if the dog was unleashed and out of control, but if it is clean, friendly, trained and under the owner's control..I don't see why there would be a problem. Answer: I feel more comfortable when a dog is on a leash, but thats just me. Answer: Too funny Bobsk8! Smokey gets me up every morning at 7:30 ( I am retired now except for my music buisness), and after waiting patiently ( sometimes), we take a 3 mile walk in the park....every morning.. During the day I take her for a least another 2 miles and my Doctor thinks it is great........ Answer: Not only do your dogs give you the motivation to get you from in front of the TV&out of the house i think they give you somekind of emotional stability my dogs are always more than willing 2 give me that cuddle i need when im down and it always works for me i couldnt imagine them not being in my life, i definately no that my life is richer 4 having them.I'm sure that is something u all can agree with Answer: Loulou, I know what you mean. I live in New York City and have witnessed a lot of people being impatient and mean to their dogs. I mean, I am working on training my pooch to heel because sometimes that's really important, like if you're on a crowded street and carrying groceries. So, I understand that you can't ALWAYS just let the dog do what he wants. But, Hudson also gets a lot of just fun walking time every day where I'm patient with him, let him sniff, etc. When another dog is approaching, I always ask the walker, "Does your dog want to meet my dog?" or something. A lot of people say no, and I figure it's cause they're in a hurry or the dog isn't friendly. But, when we do come across a friendly, social dog (with a friendly, social owner, LOL!), my dog gets the opportunity for a nice long mutual sniff, and maybe some pouncing on each other if they get along! Of course, we the walkers have to do a little dance to keep the leashes untangled! :) Answer: That leash dancing thing sounds such fun maybe they should make it a national sport...think i might b onto sumthing, haha! I see many people talking on their cell phone while they walk their dogs, and I think that's hazardous (if you've ever seen a big dog take off on an unaware person, you know what I mean) as well as being kind of well, why'd you get a dog anyway, if you can't take a breather long enough to walk them? I can see times when you'd want to use the cell phone, or have it with you on a walk, but there are people who every time they walk their dog, they're on the phone. Answer: I keep a very tight reign on my dogs - there is NO WAY I let Ronin sniff other dogs, becuase he is dog aggressive. Ilsa is prey driven. Play time is play time, but if they're on a leash, it usually means they need to buckle down and work. Now, Petsmart trips ar eanother story... ;) But I still don't let them approach strange dogs. This totally irritates me... It happens SO MUCH around here. There are people in the neighborhood who are absolutely ALWAYS on the phone when walking the dog. I think a walk is such a great time to commune with your pet, work on training, meet other dogs, etc. If you're on the phone, you can't do any of that! They obviously just view it as taking the dog to the bathroom and nothing else. What a waste of an opportunity... Answer: According to the "dog whisperer" , A dog that is walked on a long leash or runs by itself is not a happy dog. He is being the Pack leader and takes the resonsibility of protecting the pack on himself. Therefore he is under stress and not relaxing and enjoying the walk. He goes on to say a dog should be walked on a short leash at you side or behind you, so they know that you are the pack leader then they can relax and be happy. Cesar Milan is a dog phychologist and watching his tv series has made a believer out of me. He does not train dogs, he trains people to understand their dogs. He's become the joke of the professionl dog world and his old school approach has taken training back decades. Those of us with experience AND an education would never use his cruel methods to get the results. Success without punishment is not only possible but dogs trained through positive methods are much more predictable in the long run. What about a dogs spirit? Walks only on a tight lead, unless they have issues and are in a populated area, do not allow for true communication. Walks are about leadership first, but there HAS to be time for exploration and just being a dog. I too am a pack leader, and my dog has a ball on her walks. She does not wear a choke chain, is allowed to sniff and enjoy herself often throughout the walk and when I ask her to come in close..she is more than happy to comply. Leadership does not have to mean that a dog has no fun or that they have to be on a tight lead. Usually, tight leads show the lack of communication and training needed to loose lead walk a dog. Cesar walks dogs with force (ever see him NOT use a choke collar). Answer: I keep Bailey on the lead for many reasons: 1: The Danger of the Road. 2: He can be overly friendly with children (and may knock them over to lick them). 3: If he approached a DA dog that is on-lead there would be hell to pay. The list goes on............. I see walking Bailey as very enjoyable....never as a chore. Bailey is very happy on-lead b/c he doesn't know any different (unless in an area that is controlled for him to be off-lead). My dog is allowed to walk either in the heel postion or out in front on a retractable leash. If I had her always heeling, I think she would get bored with that rather quickly. If I tell her to heel, she slows down until I catch up with her and stays next to me until I allow her to go ahead again. If we walk with other dogs, she generally takes the lead position, but doesn't mind if one of the other dogs walks ahead. I think Cesars inflexible rules don't make sense. I love the people who seem to see their pet as a means to an end - the girl who just happens to be dressed to kill while walking her enormo mastiff/pit mix (boy bait) or the guy looking haplessly Hugh Grantish while blushingly walking a witty bitty Yorkie (girl bait). Ask me the difference between Cesar's and my methods and perhaps about the research they're based on if you want to be taken seriously. I have a thriving business, not all of us clammer for fame and fortune, some of us are satisfied just to work for the dogs and to improve the way they're treated. What you detect as resentment is ANGER at the way he gets away with abusing dogs for a GD TV show. What exactly is your motivation? Answer: ooh ooh! i have! i have! i've seen him give some pretty impressive leash corrections to dogs wearing head halters. my dogs do not leave the yard offleash, period. my one dog was attacked earlier this week by an off-leash dog. off-leash dogs in public places make me decidedly unhappy. Yes! You're right there, and what could be scarier than that? I'd love to know what cereal box he got his "dog psychology" degree out of:confused: ;) :lol-sign: Answer: I agree with Cesar Milan about exercise being important, but something I find funny is that he expects people to EXERCISE their dogs with the dog walking in heel position. Dogs don't get much exercise by walking with us. It's bonding and leadership, but it can't possibly be substantial exercise to a high energy dog. I would rather trust the opinion of an educated trainer who does NOT have their own TV show, than the opinion of some famous self-proclaimed "dog whisperer" with no degrees proving what he knows. Since when should people believe everything they see on TV? :p Answer: Dogs don't get much exercise by walking with us. My god, I'd have to walk 23 hours a day to exercise Meg that way. And she's not even a herding dog. Answer: No, I am not writing a book. But maybe you should :D I'd buy it. Answer: No, I am not writing a book. You already have........ It's all here on chaz........We just have to put it together. And I would buy it too......;) Ahhh.........The info you can get for free...If you take the time to "put it all together".......:D Answer: Where I live most people are not very responsible with their pets. We constantly have unleashed, unsupervised dogs running up on us. I always have my dogs leashed so I can have atleast some controll over the situation. The only time I don't allow them to stop and sniff things is when we are on our bike ride. Both dogs get a two mile ride a day, and get a walk about 2-3 times a week. Answer: But maybe you should :D I'd buy it. Thanks gaddy...that was a really nice thing to post! Answer: You already have........ It's all here on chaz........We just have to put it together. Get to writing! :D ;) Answer: I agree with Cesar Milan about exercise being important, but something I find funny is that he expects people to EXERCISE their dogs with the dog walking in heel position. I am SO with you and it's a constant debate between my partner and me. He likes to take the doggies for a very brisk, long one-hour walk when he walks them, and they are always tired at the end (and granted my partner is very fit and really does power walk with them) however I'm not as fast and fit as he is, and we do have high-energy dogs, and I just can't satisfy their needs when I walk them. So I always take them to off-leash areas where they can run and chase a ball and play with other dogs and bascially satisfy all of their needs - running, chasing, playing and socialising. We have a great dog park near us which is so big you can't see the boundaries, and is also on the river so there's a beach and calm flat water with an island in the middle so they can swim, and run in soft sand, too. They are MUCH tireder and more worn out and content and calm after an hour at that park than they are going for a boring walk with me around our suburbs, during which they are always straining on their leashes because I just can't go as fast as they want to! But we can never agree so they get both - long leashed walk in the morning and long romping at the park/river in the afternoon. And after that they are STILL full of beans! Gorgeous puppers :D Answer: I think were ever possible you should let your dogs off for a good run & a play because its near impossible for a two legged human 2 tire them out or give them exercise that they need especially high energy dogs. Its great as well wen you have more than one dog they tire each other out which is fantastic exercise for them & the kind of exercise i couldnt give them...im but just a mere human afterall Answer: I am SO with you and it's a constant debate between my partner and me. Its great 2 ave two dogs i think cause my two chase each other around playin, not only is it great 2 watch for me but they always get loadsa exercise & tire each other out, i couldnt possibly give them both that amount of exercise....i havnt got enough legs! Answer: I love having my dogs able to run and exercise off-leash whenever possible. It depends on the dog - I have two (one is nearly 15, and one is a lazy nine) who do great with minimal exercise. But then there's the 22 month old, and the ten year old shepherd who both have a need to run. Getting them out and letting them move freely is good for them, both physically and mentally. As for that whole "walk the dog behind you" nonsense .. *L* .. it's not necessary if you have established yourself properly as the leader in other ways. My dogs are very bonded to me and have an extreme amount of respect for me, but I have no need to make them walk behind me. To base leadership on that one thing borders on ridiculous. My dogs can be running off-leash freely and I can call them to me and have them respond quickly and reliably under most distractions. That may sound simple, but three of my dogs are chows and that is NOT the easiest breed to train. But between the three of them they have five obedience titles, six agility titles, one rally title (on the youngster), a herding certification, a schutzhund BH and a pet therapy dog certification. You don't accomplish these things through lack of leadership, but I have never had to make my dogs walk behind me in order to get them to understand who is the leader. Millan is vastly over-rated, but it seems it has a cult following in people who don't understand how little he knows about dog behavior. It's always interesting to me to see how much they miss in his programs .. the force that he uses, the aversive methods and the complete lack of concern about the dog at times. The only things that he promotes that carries any true credibility are that you need to exercise your dog and you need to provide a strong leadership. His means, however, mostly do not justify the end.
