M & S Insurance Renewal - Page 4

Question:

I'd be interested to know when you get your renewal Shirley, whether yours might have doubled? I hope not for your sake, but it seems to be going that way from these posts doesn't it?!

Answer:

Can I just say a few things, though I have said them before!

Insurance is all about risk assessment, it's not a scam it's all about assessing risk. If the premium is way to high, that's the insurance companies way of saying "get lost, we don't want to insure you - the risk it is too high!".

Now I used to work for Axa Insurance and although they're the oldest Insurance company out there, they don't know their a**e from their elbow.

It's unlikely that M&S have given cheap prices for the first year to lure you in, what's more likely is that Axa have miscalculated (yet again!) and come the second year of trading have had a horrible shock with claims coming in and 0 excess. To cover their losses they will put premiums up, common sense really. It has nothing to do with any person personally!!!!!! It's all to do with company experience, dog, area and claims in the previous year.

Also, although two companies can have the same underwrtier, the company will specify what areas they want to cover and the underwriter will then fit the policy round these requests.

Car insurance companies all have their little "thing":

Churchhill: They really will give you a cheap quote in the first year to try and keep you the following year, however it's more than likely the premiums will shoot up.

Esure: They will only insure "safe" drivers, therefore will only take you on with so many no claims, but then as soon as you have an accident, will wash their hands of you.

More Than: They give all the banter about "no claims for life". This in fact is a no brainer cos when you do have an accident you have no claims for life with them, when you move to another company it won't count anyway.

The same thing applies with all these companies that say they will give no claims for second drivers. That's fine, but as soon as you move insurers it doesn't count anymore and you're back to square one.

But pet insurance doesn't work like that, it's not worth it to the companies to have strategies as it's not a big industry (apart from the life insurance, when a previous condition is likely to be discounted when moving insurers).

So all it boils down to is cover vs risk. If according to their underwriters your particular type of dog in your particular area has had a lot of claims then your premium will go up, if not it will stay the same (it rarely goes down! ).

Insurance companies are greedy (what businesses aren't these days?!) but they certainly don't just go around guessing premiums. There is always a reason behind it, if there wasn't they'd all be out of business by now! And we can't have that can we!

Rant over!

I have put in a few claims for Shady and Milo over the year with M&S and my renewl for both has just come through. Pleased to say its only gone up by a few pence each, although they are not offering the no excess now, they have said there will be a £50 excess for each.
Quite pleased overall as looking at other companies this is still very competative.

I'm sure i've read somewhere else (on Here) that the same thing happened to someone else - their renewal came through, and it was with an excess, so they phoned up to get it changed (but of course, your premium will go up)

I called them and they changed it to no excess - went up a bit - about £50 per year, but decided to stick with them cos i worry a lot and seem to go to the vets for the slughtest thing and this means i can claim the consultation fee back.

just had my M&S renewal and it has gone up for the 2 of them by a tenner a month. Was just speaking to one of our Ute Dog Club members about it and she said try Kamatz Insurance, have had a look, and their de-luxe policy is only 11.99 a month, so have e mailed them. Will let you know what is said when they get back to me.

I have just been reading through all of these posts and wonder if we are talking about the same insurance company I have had M&S since we have had Lexi we are on our 3rd policy year with them we have 0 excess and were paying £11.19 per month up till October last year when her policy came up for renewel and now it is £12.34 per month which I don't think is an unreasonable increase we made a claim in January of this year for £138 and we received the cheque back within 7 days of postage I did phone them though to question the fact that the new policy didn't state 0 excess and they assured me it just carried on from policy to policy unless otherwise requested by me...So we shall see if the claim makes much difference this October...

As I said originally, my first year for Georgie with M & S was a mere £120, yet the renewal for this year increased to £230, that's quite a blooming increase considering I haven't claimed once even!!! Plus I have a £75 excess with it too!

Anyways, because I forgot to go with the Direct LIne one I found which was again only around £120 p.a. then Georgie had his limp right on the renewal date (grrrr Georgie!!) I stupidly rang them up, paid by credit card and renewed his policy with M & S!!! I had to, just in case Georgie's limp was a serious problem. I couldn't have claimed off a new insurance company if I'd only been with them for one day could I!! This won't happen next year, I won't be caught out twice, M & S can shove their doubled up charges coz I probably won't have made a claim yet again this coming year (can't claim for skin probs and that's all he ever has )so I will be well prepared before next year's renewal date. I blame the fact that Axa has taken them over, and like Random has said, I don't think they've got it right somehow. How can they warrant doubling my premium when I haven't even made a claim in the very first year I've been with them. I wouldn't say I was a high risk category! It's not on!

Cassie's will be coming up for renewal in the next month, that will be interesting, coz her's actually started at £240 for the very first year with them! I dread to think what premium they will come up with for her 2nd year, even though I haven't made a claim, and again I'm on a £75 excess. Will be interested to see that one. Mind you, she is old, so is a very high risk, it's a wonder they'll touch her really.
