I know what you meant in your original post and think taking on a rescue is a great thing. The breed rescue should be able to help find a suitable dog for you, might take a while, but i'm i'm sure he/she is out there hiya thanks! were looking at any pups though, dont matter if its a cross/pedigreee/alien!! lol we will still love it! just see what will happen i guess! i have said what dogs suit us etc, so see what happens! Answer: Originally Posted by Moobli I am not JoedeeUK but what I think she is trying to say is that you stated that you would like "non-standard" colours - however black is actually a standard colour in GSDs and, as Joedee loves to point out sable isn't a colour, but a coat pattern (as in grey sable, gold sables). Therefore it would seem you haven't really read up on this breed before going to breed rescue. However, I don't personally think that just because you aren't aware of the standard and non-standard colours, that automatic makes you unworthy of giving a GSD a great home. Just for your own knowledge, buy a few GSD specific books, or get some from the library. A couple of my favs are :- Understanding the German Shepherd Dog and Training the German Shepherd Dog, both by John Cree. I think I had the John Cree books (it was a long time ago ) but if I remember correct they are very good reading Answer: Originally Posted by knottybabe hiya i have about 10 books!! and i have one of them john ones somewhere! ive read so many! i should be a top trainer by now lol! oh, well i know other things, and i was actually told by a breeder that only short coat black/tan is acceptable........ so thats why ive always thought all other colours & patterns wernt acceptable....... ive been reading up on them for years, maybe i should have know that i dont know, maybe that makes me a bad person?! not knowing the colours i dont know?! Unless you're planning on going on Mastermind with a special subject of GSD's then don't worry about not knowing the colours. This sort of thing is tainted with a bit of snobbery if you ask me. I don't think your dog will mind at all if you don't know what shades and patterns he/she is available in. It is not snobbery, I've been involved with GSD rescue for a very long time & currently the requests are for longcoat blue bitch puppies(blue is the new "white") When one of these requests was home checked(we do not tell people when we are going)our home checker found the"pet"home had a large shed in the rear yard with not one or two but five GSDs in pens inside & three had puppies There was no one in the house & the rear yard gates where the shed was weren't even locked hence our home checker(a police dog handler BTW)could get access Yet the "lady"had been so nice & convincing & told our rescue Lady that she was pleased to have a home check ! It is not snobbery at all GSDs are not a breed for first time dog owners that have not researched the breed, something as basic as knowing the colours of a breed is very easy to research(the breed standard is on the KC site for starters)& there are so many good boks on the breed on the market & also websites al about GSDs that really there is no excuse for not finding out everything you can before starting to look for a dog Our rescue very rarely gets puppies in & those that do arrive in the kennels nearly al have problems that make them unsuitable for a first time GSD owner. We only "officially"rescue GSDs(being a GSD rescue)& our Lady has over 50 years experience of the breed & has spent over 40 years doing rescue, believe me she is no snob, but anyone ringing up wanting an "Alsatian"because they have the "smooth coats"is very quickly corrected-another example of someone failing to research the breed Answer: well maybe i shouldnt get one then, obviously im just wrong for not knowing the coats, although i know every illness they get, i know how much exercise they need on and off lead, how much food & water, how intelligent they are, where they first started out, and what dog made them famous, how to love one, maybe that doesnt matter i dont know Answer: Originally Posted by knottybabe well maybe i shouldnt get one then, obviously im just wrong for not knowing the coats, although i know every illness they get, i know how much exercise they need on and off lead, how much food & water, how intelligent they are, where they first started out, and what dog made them famous, how to love one, maybe that doesnt matter i dont know I think you have researched the breed very well, and you have done the right thing by doing all that 1st and not going for a dog/pup without doing so. Have you spoken to YOUR local GSD rescue? See what they say about your ability to look after a pooch? Don't be disheartened hunx x x x Answer: Originally Posted by Doggydina I think you have researched the breed very well, and you have done the right thing by doing all that 1st and not going for a dog/pup without doing so. It sounds like you have done a lot anyway. I don't think it matters that you don't know what colours are standard! When I read about dogs I usually forget about that bit. Stats like that just don't stay in my mind. I focus on the temperament and personality traits, which is what is important to me You aren't running out and getting the first pup you see, you're waiting for the right time and the right dog for you. I don't know why everyone is being so down on you at the moment (((hugs))) |
