Cat tail injury/loss of bladder functionQuestion:"About three weeks ago, my cat Jasmine had an injury to her tail. We think a dog got her, and her tail was completely limp. The Vet told us that her tail was dead. It had been pulled away from her body and broken. This also caused her to be unable to urinate on her own. We have been expressing her bladder a few times every day since then. She also is unable to go poop like before. It just falls out. From what I've read online the loss of bladder function is normal with this type of injury because the nerves are damaged. She hasn't shown any improvement in that area. She has also been leaking urine a little bit for the last week or so if she lays in certain positions. I dont know if that is a good or bad sign. Our vet doesn't have a lot of experience with this type of injury because most people with this problem give up after about a week and put the cat to sleep. We love Jasmine too much. She is like our child, and she acts completely normal and happy. If anyone has advice on this type of injury I would appreciate it. I saw a couple of postings that talked about cats with nerve damage in limbs, and people suggested Silicea 6x which is homeopathic to help heal the nerves, and I'm thinking about trying that. Also, I'm wondering what the signs of improvement are. How gradually does the function come back. Would the fact that she sometimes leaks urine be a sign of improvement, or the opposite? Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks" Answer: hmmm, I have come across a couple of cats like this at the shelter I volunteer at. One of them did regain bladder control within about a month of her coming into the shelter the other one unfortunatly didnt and had to be put down after three months as nobody would take her on. I dont know of and treatment but I know you can have a EMG test. Its quite expensive I think but can test whether the cat is receiving any signal in the anus/tail area. If they are not then chance of recovery is very slim. As to the urine leaking both of the cats we had showed this sign so not sure if its good or bad. I hope Jasmine does get better, I have my fingers crossed for both of you Answer: Hi there, I have just read your post and wondered what has happened to Jasmine since? We have a Tom called Charlie who got run over by a Police car just over 2 onths ago, 3 vets and £4000 later he has come home but shows the symptoms exactly as Jasmine. His tail is dead and as a result of this his poo gets stuck between his bum and tail and falls out after he has left his litter tray. Not too much of a problem except that Charlie seems very confused when he can't find it in the tray. We believe the cure for this is the tail off. He was being expressed at the vets but this stopped around a month ago and we were told he was having 20 small wees a day in his tray, unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case at home. He does indeed use the tray many times for small dribbles but has also leaked when sitting in a particular position and also seems to do the same when relaxed, or possibly in his sleep. Any help or ideas for us would be useful as we want to give him every chance before we even think of putting an otherwise healthy and happy 3 year old cat to sleep. Thanks in advance. |
