Weight lose,not eating drinking help!!!

Question:
I'm not sure where to begin. My cat George (roughly a year old otherwise healthy as is his blood sister) began to show signs of getting sick in December 2006. A few weeks later he began to rapidly lose weight, lose interest in everything but sleeping, barely ate or drank, and had mucous and blood in his feces. I took him to the vet and brought a stool with me. They did a leukemia and FIV test on him and both were negative. Stool sample only confirmed yes it was blood. He was given a shot of antibiotics, a bubble of injected fluids, and sent home with citrus flavored antibiotics and Science Diet canned gastrointestial wet food. He showed very slight improvement the next day after the fluids were gone. From there he continued to get worse all over again. We were told to bring him back in where they ran a full blood test (resulting in only a bacterial infection as my results),said he had a very sore throat, gave him another shot of antibiotics, did a xray of his belly to make sure he hadn't swallowed anything, and sent me home with amoxicillan. He still showed no progress so he went back to the vet for another shot of antibiotics and was given more fluids. He had lost more weight and still had a fever this time of 103.6 (?). We were given some formula, science diet vitality solid food, and Clavamox. I was giving him formula, his medicine, and unflavored pedialyte. This time the antibiotic seemed to have worked as he was starting to eat solid food again (very hungry at that) two days later after I presume he broke his fever. It has been almost 3 weeks now and he is back to skin and bones. He is hardly eating or drinking, his coat looks awful, and just sleeps all day. I have searched online to maybe get a clue as to what could be wrong with him but can't seem to find anything like this. It has been roughly $1000 so far and don't want to watch him wither away! Do you have any ideas what could be wrong with him? Any tests we may need to do? Tips tricks comments anything to help my George get better???
Answer:
In a case such as this, (been there DONE THAT with a sweet baby cat i found on a country road...), is to take him to an animal HOSPITAL. This is a place that doesn't just have vets...these people are SPECIALISTS!!! Obviously the vet you are currently going to doesn't have the ability to confirm a diagnosis. I didn't check to see where you live...so I don't know...but you'd have to live in a major city as these hospitals are generally only found in larger cities. I live in the country and the animal hospital is 45 minutes away from us. We recently had to have surgery on one of my dog' legs. It was major surgery. One of canada's leading bone surgeons performed it. He is doing extremely well...in fact our vet was honest enough to tell us that we'd need a specialist for such an operation. So, if you don't have an animal hospital, you can at least find a specialist... Hope this was helpful... ;)

this is a tough one. the only thing i can think of is that the fever (and 103.6 is a fever) may have been even higher at some point and caused some secondary problems. do you notice any changes in the cat's personality? the weight loss and skin problems indicate that his immune system may be compromised as result. with cats, a fever is not noticable until it's too late in most cases. it's not your fault. it sounds like your vet has done all they can so far short of a steriod. if you have the means, you can take it further and you'll be referred to a "specialist". i'm not trying to be negative, but all you're likely to find out even then is a possibly a better explanation, but not not a cure. anyways, good luck and i still encourage you to do all you can and rely on your own instincts to do what you think is best. you know "george" best afterall......
