Answer:
Thrush can be prevented very easily if you keep your horse's stall clean and its feet picked out on a regular basis. Thrush is caused mainly from standing in urine or manure all day...stalled horses are most likely to get it, but other horses can get it too. However there are a couple of products on the market that are supposed to cure thrush..."thrush buster" is one of them... But one of the best ways to get rid of thrush is to mix bleach with a glycerin based hand lotion(1/2 and 1/2) and apply it around your horse's frog with a cotton swab. You may need a lot of cotton swabs because they turn blackish brown really fast! equisearch.com actually recommends wrapping cotton around a hoofpick and doing it that way! Tick bites could probably be treated the same way as a tick bite on a human...pull the tick out with tweezers and use a sterile pin to pull out any leftover pieces. Other than that you don't need to worry about it unless your horse gets Lyme disease (which couldn't have been prevented once the tick bit them anyway). Supposedly Lyme disease is rare but we had at least six cases at our barn last summer. I don't know which products work the best but spot-on tick treatment might help prevent tick bites. Lameness is a broad topic...it entirely depends on what kind of lameness we're talking about because there are about a thousand ways to make a horse lame and there are dozens of ways to treat lamenesses...and it entirely depends on the situation. Do you have anything specific in mind? Bruised heels is most likely caused by too-long back feet and a little trimming can sometimes fix that right up. I have a filly that overreaches however, and I have an excellent farrier but she still taps her front heels with her back toes. Bell boots give a little protection...I personally like the no-turn bells the best because they have more padding in the back but some of the professionals choice bell boots are also very well padded (or any neoprene boot!). The regular bell boots are great for preventing your horse from pulling its shoes but I can't imagine that they offer much protection to the heels. Finally, flies and gnats. Honestly, I can't answer that one. That is an age old question that will probably never be answered. There are a ton of products on the market for that and I honestly think that they all work about the same. I like Bronco (made by Farnam I think...) because it is inexpensive. It contains citronella so it really works against mosquitos...which are a really big problem where I live. It doesn't do a bad job with other things either...but no product is perfect...and if there is one out there let me know! I'd love to try it! I knew an old steer farmer who used to wipe a 1:7 kerosene and water mixture on his cows and apparently that works wonders but I AM NOT ENDORSING IT!!!! You are more than welcome to try it but it is really bad for the skin (it dries it out!!!!) and of course...it's flammable... :- I don't particularly recommend it but I thought it was very interesting.
