Very ill ferret, please help!Question:hi, i'm new to this web site, but I'm looking for answers. We have a 2 yr old male ferret named cujo. He used to be our fattest and healthiest guy. Now his weight is down to 785g from 1300g. He is suffering from lethargy, nausea, vomiting, and rapid weight loss. These symptoms started about 2 months ago when we started to notice his weight loss within a matter of weeks. We immediatly took him to our vet who suggested blood work and biopsies of what looked to be like hot spots on his skin. The biopsy came back normal but his blood work had one abnormal liver value. This time the vet wanted to do a cytology of the liver cells and recheck his liver value after a weeks worth of baytril (which he absolutly hates!). The liver value returned to normal as were the liver cells. At this time Cujo was also experiencing diarrhea which he was on flagyl for. His stools also returned to normal. At this time we decided to get a second opinion. This new vet suggested a parasite check and an ultrasound. After the ultrasound was performed it came back that he could possibly have IBD, possible partial obstruction, unlikely cancer because of his age, or something else-the ultrasound did conclude that Cujo did have inflammation of his intestines as well as other organs. It suggested that he may have a small mass in his pancreas. Immediatly we thought -insulinoma! But his glucose levels were normal. This vet prescibed prednisone for the inflammation and gave us two options. We could keep him on pred until he got stronger and put on more weight and then do exploratory surgery or we could jump right into the surgery. This was a tough decision because we didn't want to put him through an unnecessary surgery that wouldn't even cure him just diagnose him. So we have him on pred, and his original vet has put him clavamox and pepcid(a peanut butter recipe). Cujo continues to vomit and have the same symptoms mentioned above. He does have good days and bad days. The bad days are the most disturbing because I feel like we are doing nothing to help him. If anyone has had or heard of symptoms like this please comment. Answer: Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Cujo's illness. I know that must be heartbreaking! I am a new ferret owner myself, so don't have experience with the symptoms you're describing, but I can offer you some information that might be helpful. Try contacting this ferret helpline - Ferrethelp@Houstonareaferretassocition.com This is answered by a couple who ran a ferret shelter for about 20 years and have loads of ferret knowledge. They might have seen something like what you've got there. And/or take a look at this website - tons of ferret medical information: http://www.afip.org/ferrets/ Also - are the vets you are seeing experienced with ferrets? There are a lot of vets out there who will see ferrets, but really have no experience with them. You might try finding a local ferret shelter, rescue group, or association and see if they can recommend a good, experienced ferret vet in your area. In any case, my thoughts are with you and Cujo with hopes for his rapid recovery! Answer: calm down and take a deep breath all you need to do is nurse the ferret back to health i am just now nursing my little one back to health go to a pet store and looking for nursing milk for ferrets and puppies what the milk does is acts like a mothers milk and increases the appetite so that the ferret will eat more of its food i would suggest using Marshall pet food an dif you can go to Marshall.com and look for Duk Soup it is for Malnutrioned ferrets. GOOD LUCK jenna |
