Too old to breed?

Question:
I have a rabbit she is 2 yrs old, I bought a female rabbit or so I though she turns out to be a he and now she is pregnant. I am very worried about letting this pregnancy go ahead as your not meant to breed femail rabbits after the age of a year due to the pelvis fusing. Am i write to be worried or will it be ok? Any advise welcome many Thanks Karina

I don't have as much experience with rabbits as I do with cavies...however as long as the rabbits are both close in size or the same breed you shouldn't have too much trouble. In cavies(guinea pigs) you would normally breed around 6 months before the pelvis fused..I am not sure on rabbits, but its probally close depending on size. If it makes you feel any better, I had a cavies called Mystic who never bred no matter how many times I tried until she was over a year old. I had though she was sterile. She delivered her first litter well except one baby was breach and didn't make it. She countinued to breed for another year or so before I retired her. She did very well, but for some reason one of the litter was always still born. I hope this helps a little bit, but I would still call you vet and soon b/c I think a rabbits gestation is somewhere around 28-32 days. She will need her own cage and a nest box with extra bedding...A few bay before birth she will make a nest using straw, feces(as it decays it creates warmth) and her own fur from her belly..If you find that she has delivered and not bad a nest..use some soft towls and warn water bottles to keep the babies warm until she makes her own... Also if the babies are very chilled ...put them next to your skin until they warm up and atart moving around. The person I worked with used to put them in his armpits!!! It worked! Good luck and let me know how you make out. CC

I have never heard of the pelvis fusing? When animals are pregnant they have a hormone called progesterone that loosens the ligaments so birth is easy, that's for the larger animals that have one baby. Rabbits have large litters so the babies are very small, the hips shouldn't be a problem, unless the dad is a lot larger than her. Then you need to watch for stuck babies when she's delivering, usually at 31 days. Is the rabbit indoors or out? If it's very cold outside you many need to bring the babies in during the day and bring them to mom early in the morning or bedtime to nurse, then bring them back in again. You'll need a nest box with sides high enough so babies can't hop out but mom can get in, it should be a little bigger than her. She'll need lots of hay so she can make her own nest, you can also try putting it in the box for her but she will probably take it out until she's ready to build it herself. The night before she delivers (sometimes a week earlier) she will pull out her fur and use it to cover her babies with it. It may look like just fur, but the babies are usually buried within. And "NO" you do not want poop in the nest, rabbits are very clean with the babies. If she's pooping in the box it's because she doesn't yet think of it as a nest, more like a litter box. Make sure it's clean around day 29 so she'll have a clean nest to work with. The babies will be born naked, you'll need to check the next day to make sure their are no cold or dead ...
