LindaB & PLorikeet - what do you feed your RLs?Question:And anybody else that has a lory, please pipe in! :) What do you feed your lory? How much? How often (once daily, twice daily, etc)? If you could list all the different foods that you feed and answer my questions against each different food that you feed, I'd really appreciate it! I'm feeding Cosmo a nectar powder that I mix with water. It's supposed to be 1 part powder to 5 parts water (for smaller lories) or 4 parts water (for larger lories). I've been using the 5 parts water because Cosmo just doesn't seem very big to me. I feed this mix once daily, first thing in the morning. It's gone by the time I get home from work. I mix in with this mix some other stuff the pet store sold me (actually came with a "Lory starter kit" that I bought). A pinch of some very colourful looking dry food called "Pretty Bird Lory Special" and a pinch of something that's a cockatiel granular food of some kind (smells like Juicy Fruit gum!). Yesterday, it hit me that maybe I should be doubling up on the nectar mix (since he always finishes it by the time I get home from work). So this morning, I mixed 2 tablespoons of powder to 9 tablespoons of water (and the usual pinch of the 2 dry foods). This was also all gone when I got home today! Should I be feeding even more??? I also give Cosmo assorted fruits each day, twice a day. Most fruit he turns his beak up at! He doesn't mind "crushed pineapple" and apple sauce, but as far as "real" fruits... he won't eat them. He showed some interest in clementines the other day, but just sort of pierced the skin and licked the juice. He didn't really eat it. I will continue to try different things here. I just wanna make sure that I am not starving him, but I don't really wanna overfeed either! I've heard some parrots can get quite obese. Any input on this subject would be very welcome! Thanks! :o) Answer: Indigo gets her nectar first thing in the morning too! We buy the Quikko brand and like you it says to mix one part powder with 5 parts water. (she weighs 120g so she is tiny too, usually males are a bit bigger) She usually finishes that buy noon (I've watched her on the weekend and noticed that she finishes in 3-4 hours) and as my husband and I both work during the day as well, we leave a mixture of the little colourful fruity pellets and a baby formula the store suggested. She eats a bit of that throughout the day. I've tried her on the cockatiel pellets - the one that smells like gum, but she won't touch it. I know that one is very good for them and will try her again on it.As soon as I get home I give her a variety of things to nibble on while I make supper. If you have an international food section at your grocery store, such as Food Basics, there is a guava nectar I think it's Mr. Gouda's brand that Indigo loves! I mix this with baby food. I buy some of the small (first foods) jars of vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, squash. peas, beans etc. and mix a teaspoon of that with a teaspoon of unsweetened applesauce and a tablespoon of the guava nectar and she just dives in! This way she gets her vegies too! On the weekend my husband was preparing asparagus and gave her a spear to nibble at while he was busy and she loved that too! The fruits Indigo does not like so far are bananas. I think the persimmons made her sick, not sure, but may try again at a later date. Answer: Didn't have enough room to finish. My husband also hand feeds Indigo a piece of apple, pear or mango (these are her favourite fruits) about 8:30-9 p.m at night. Then she plays a bit more and it's night night at 10 p.m. So I would say, she eats at least 3 times a day, but the dry food she could be nibbling at it a bit throughout the day. If you are uncertain I would talk to the breeder or pet store where you bought Cosmo. That's usually what I do if I am unsure about the food. They told me that she won't over-eat and will stop eating when she's full. When I am home I notice that she would rather be on me or playing than eating. |
