Let me try to explain....Question:Okay, this will be long, but I'm going to try to explain why some of my posts come off as negative and "know it all" here. I'm not going to try to speak for Suebegone, but I have a feeling she'll agree with alot of this post. I've worked in a vet clinic for 12 years and believe me, it's a frustrating job at times. A few of you on here think that because I tell you how it is, I'm a bi*&h and a know-it-all. Well, I probably do know more than you. I went to school so that I would know more than the average pet owner. It's frustrating to no end to be confronted daily with pet owners who care so little about their pets. I'll give you 3 examples from just this week!! First, a yorkie breeder who we've never seen before calls to see if we'll artificially inseminate his 1 1/2 yr old female yorkie because his 11 MONTH old male doesn't know what he's doing and can't breed her! When I told him that the male is awfully young and that by the next heat cycle he'd probably be ready to do his thing, he got mad and said that he'd waited 1 1/2 years for pups and he won't wait any longer! My boss gave me the okay to tell him that we wouldn't do it. I asked him what he was planning to ask for his pups and he said that he's going to ship them to the west coast because he can get $1500 a piece for them there!! Very reputable breeder - NOT! Today a dog came in for suture removal from an aural hematoma repair we'd done in AUGUST! They were told to bring the dog back in 2 weeks to get the sutures removed! Needless to say, the sutures were buried in the skin after 3 months and it was not pleasant for the dog at all to have them removed. Suture removal is free at our clinic so the only reason they didn't bring her in on time was laziness. A lady walked in the other day asking what we'd charge to euthanize her 2 cats. I asked her why she was euthanizing them and she said she was moving and couldn't take them with her. I asked her if she'd talked to her regular veterinarian about this and she said they'd never been to a vet (they were 10 yrs old!!!). I informed her that we do NOT perform convenience euthansias and suggested she try to find them a hope to which she insisted that they could never be happy with anyone but her! PUHLEAZ!!! How self-righteous is that! I'm going to kill my pets instead of giving them a chance to be happy with someone else! It's these kinds of thing that give me a bad attitude! I see it daily!!! And phone calls ...... "HI! My dog has been vomitting for 2 months and hasn't eaten in a week, what do you think is wrong with him?" Gee, I don't know, there are about 20 things I can think of off the top of my head, why don't you bring him in so we can take a look at him? "Oh, I'll have to check with my spouse I'll call you back" One week later........"Hi, I called last week about my dog, he's still not eating and he can't get up now, can we bring him in?" Then when they arrive they are all upset because we can't save the dog - maybe being a little more prompt would have made a world of difference????? I'm not kidding, I get these calls ALL THE TIME! You make the vet profession out to be so money hungry. Let me tell you.....our accounts receivable is well over $15,000 and a good portion of that will never be collected. Why? Because we tend to trust people when they say they'll pay us and, most importantly, because we truly want to help animals. We do good samaritan work on a regular basis. We get little thanks - but knowing a pet is well because of us is enough to keep going. Yeah, my job has it's great moments, but it's frustrating to see people, even on a free message board, bash myprofession, and my advice. I don't ask you to agree with it, but don't call me a know-it-all just because I tell you what I DO know. It gives me the impression that you really don't want the truth, you just want to be told that you are doing the right thing. I know Suebegone has a rep for being harsh, and she is, but she knows a lot. I don't agree on everything she says, especially regarding animal orthopedics, and we've had some arguments. But I suspect part of the reason for that is that I enjoy a good argument occasionally and I think Sue might too! I don't think I'm quite as harsh, but I suppose you could call me brutally honest at times. I can tell when a person really wants help versus someone who will do anything to avoid going to the vet! I hope this explains my veiws somewhat. I plan to continue posting here, and I guess if you don't like me you can just skip over my posts. Some people here have really appreciated my help. Answer: YOU TELL EM' SISTA Answer: dd I like having people like you and suebgone around because it brings some real knowledge to the boards. People can post their questions and if its not something that I have personally experienced with one of my pets then the most I can do is say to take the pet to the vet. Its nice to have an idea of what you are facing before you get to the vet with your sick pet so you aren't totally clueless. Anybody who comes on here "asking" for advice and then getting upset about the advice/opinions they get can just leave or else suck it up. You don't need to explain yourself to anybody. Keep up the good work! |
